Excellent, serious, detailed introduction

This is an excellent introduction to modern string theory. Accurate, precise, and gets into details that other introductions to string theory pass over in silence. Becker, Becker and Schwarz move too fast over the basics, and their coverage of conformal field theory, the operator product expansion, etc, is too perfunctory. West covers all these topics in detail and has a better treatment of the conformal Ward identities than Di Francesco et al.
The most elementary, serious introduction to string theory is Zwiebach's book which suits upper undergraduates. But Zwiebach, while excellent for its purposes, does not go too far into the subject, does not cover conformal field theory, covariant quantization, etc. West's book takes off from the point where Zwiebach ends.
Polchinski's book is too heavy going for first year graduate students. Kritisis is too fast for beginners. Volume 1 of Green, Schwarz and Witten is excellent, but I find that West has more details. Their volume 2 is advanced, but covers topics that are by now outdated. Ortin's book is excellent, but is basically a (super)gravity textbook. Another excellent textbook that is not so well known is Brian Hatfield's book. Its first half is devoted to quantum field theory, primarily from a path integral point of view, while its second half is a very careful treatment of the bosonic string, primarily from Polyakov's point of view. I think that one can read Hatfield's book before West's, and the right sequence to learn string theory may be Zwiebach, Hatfield, West, then Polchisnki.

Branes engaged

Though this is called an introduction to strings and branes, this book in not for the untrained reader. Graduate level mathematics is a basic requirement to understand this book - for example the starting point of the book uses metric tensor notation to formulate the Dirac quantization of a classical bosonic point particle in Minkowski space-time. The book does not cover more advanced topics like Calabi-Yau compactifications, string based black hole computations and the AdS-CFT duality, but the topics that are covered are presented in a comprehensive manner that should be straightforward to follow given the caveat with respect to the comprehension of mathematical notation mentioned earlier. The author leads the reader from the formulations of simple non-interacting particles and builds on those techniques to describe constraints, extra degrees of freedom and interactions. Overall, an excellent introduction for the graduate-level mathematical/theoretical physicist.
A Guide to Feynman Diagrams in the Many-Body Problem (Dover Books on Physics) is a handy companion book to support the material.

This is an excellent tutorial on the theoretical physics of unified physics ... strings and branes

Some theoretical physicists have what they see as an exciting new "theory of everything," string theory, that they feel will unify two seemingly diametrically opposed theories, quantum mechanics and general relativity. The theory of everything must unify nature's fundamental forces (gravitational, electromagnetic, and nuclear). Stephen Hawking is very interested in string theory. Gianguido Dall'Agata will be discussing the discovery of the SO(8) gauged theories of supergravity at King's College this month. This discussion has yet to take place and therefore is not a factor in this introductory book on strings and branes.
West in his discussion of string interactions, ultimately concludes that "One of the unusual aspects of string theory is that the theory used to calculate string scattering is often more complicated than the result itself, namely the the string scattering amplitudes." Throughout the book mathematical models are used to illustrate physics equations and formulae. Supersymmetric theories not discussed in the book can be found in West's complimentary book, Introduction to Supersymmetry and Supergravity. Additionally, topics not discussed in this book are Calabi-Yau Compactification (differential geometry required here), string-based black hole entropy computations and the AdS-CFT duality.
