Grade 4-8?Cycling enthusiasts will appreciate this book's close-up full-color photographs as much as its informative content. While Bill Gutman's Mountain Biking (Capstone, 1995) and Dwain Abramowski's Mountain Bikes (Watts, 1990) focus more on history and/or technique, Hautzig traces the origins and birth of the mountain bike, then moves into the factory to discuss materials and crafting processes used in its manufacture. Prose is clear and good definitions of specialized names and technical terms are included, as are examples of the laws of physics and/or chemistry as they apply to the manufacturing process. Each part of the bicycle is labeled and defined in terms of its role in making the product work. The quality of the photography is very high, although the eerie metallic cast to a number of the pictures is a bit unnerving. Pointers for choosing the right size bike are provided, as are some general maintenance and safety guidelines.
