About the Author
John McWilliams is Abernethy Professor of American Literature at Middlebury College in Vermont. He is the author of Political Justice in a Republic: James Fenimore Cooper's America (1972), Hawthorne, Melville and the American Character (Cambridge, 1984) and The American Epic (Cambridge, 1989).

McWilliams examines the impact of crisis on New England's indentity through the Antebellum era, This exploration of cultural memory invokes the intertwining dialects if religion, politics, history, and literature. He traces how the legacy of Puritan experience and culture was transformed through the Revolution and early nineteenth century. Beginning with the colonial settlement of the region, through the antinomian religious crisis, the violence of conflict with native american population in King Philip's War and how these fed into the hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials, McWilliams then turns his attention to the Puritan restoration by way of rebellion and the Revolution War, and its subsequent legacy for Abolition. As much as I esteem Nathaniel Hawthorne, he dominated the literary voices in McWilliams cultural analysis, as George Bancroft does among the voice of historians, particularly until the closing chapters of the book. The two standout chapters in my personal estimation and interest were those on the Salem witch Trails and King Philips War, and the chapter on the Revolutionary conflicts at Lexington and Concord.
