Egypt occupies a central position in the Arab world. Its borders between sand and sea have existed for millennia and yet, until 1952, the country was ruled by foreigners. Afaf al-Sayyid Marsot explores the paradoxes of Egypt's history in an updated edition of her successful A Short History of Modern Egypt. Charting the years from the Arab conquest, through the age of the Mamluks, Egypt's incorporation into the Ottoman Empire, the liberal experiment in constitutional government in the early twentieth century, followed by the Nasser and Sadat years, the new edition takes the story up to the present day. During the Mubarak era, Egyptians have seen major changes with the rise of globalization and its effects on their economy, the advent of new political parties, the entrenchment of Islamic fundamentalism and the consequent changing attitudes to women. This short history is ideal for students and travelers.

Review
'The book surverys a dense and complicated history in clear and accessible language, and succeeds in appealing to both scholarly and popular audiences. Marsot writes with the confidence, sensitivity, and at times the sense of humour of one who intimately knows and loves Egypt and its rich history."
Heather J. Sharkey, The International History Review

Concise history of Egypt, but not intended as a tourist's book.
By Jason Fossen
This is a concise history of Egypt that was just the right length (and physical size, for the carry-on bag) for a flight from the US to Egypt. Keep in mind, however, that it is not a tourist's book (it can't be used for planning day trips) and is a bit dry in writing style. A good book, though, well worth the price.

Lacking detail and sources
By Catalin Braescu
I've read the book as Kindle edition. While I am not a scholar of Egypt myself, as a journalist living in Egypt for more than 7 years I have a good knowledge of the local history, especially the modern and contemporary era.
The author presents the major episodes relatively correct. The faults I find:
1. tendency to rely on popular anecdotes, as opposed to verifiable facts;
2. lack of attribution for anything out of the ordinary. No history book can call itself this way without clear sources.
3. gross inaccuracies every now and then; for example the author wrote "For one thing, the United States gave Egypt a subsidy of two billion dollars a year, all of which subsidized staple food to avoid a recurrence of the riots of 1977" while most of the aid (not subsidy) was to be spent on military hardware and services, as per post-Camp David suite of agreements.
So don't count on this being a history book, take it as a very personal view of past events by what seems to be an Arab journalist writing without much research.

An intellectual dissertation
By SInohey
The title says it all. This is a didactic linear compendium of events that formed Egypt, reported in an even tone. The author refrains from injecting her personal opinion. She presents an unbiased and unvarnished history of what is arguably the most influential country in the Middle East. The casual reader and the interested scholar will gather some understanding about the root causes of the turmoil in the region. Although not a tourist guide, the book is recommended for anyone planning a visit to that great land to understand its people and their customs. It is well worth the investment in time and its price.
