Julian Dowdeswell and Michael Hambrey describe the flora and fauna in addition to the human influences on the environment, from the sustainable approach of the Inuit, to the devastating damage inflicted by hunters and issues arising from the presence of military security installations. Finally, they consider the future prospects of the Arctic islands Julian Dowdeswell is Director of the Scott Polar Research Institute and Professor of Physical Geography at 0he University of Cambridge. He received the Polar Medal from Queen Elizabeth for his contributions to the study of glacier geophysics and the Gill Memorial Award from the Royal Geographical Society. He is chair of the Publications Committee of the International Glaciological Society and head of the Glaciers and Ice Sheets Division of the International Commission for Snow and Ice. Michael Hambrey is Director of the Centre for Glaciology at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth. A past recipient of the Polar Medal, he was also given the Earth Science Editors' Outstanding Publication Award for Glaciers (Cambridge University Press). Hambrey is also the author of Glacial Environments (British Columbia, 1994).

Never knew a whole lot about this part of the world

But now do---this is an overview of the islands of the Arctic Ocean, which includes Greenland, Svalbard (Norwegian Territory), the Russian Islands, and the Canadian Arctic Archipelgo. As most will probably know, Greenland, the largest Island in the world is a world of its own, but who's heard of Baffin Island, as large as Texas; Svalbard, where ther's an international effort underway to assemble a seed and tissue bank for the possible salvation of species that may be hard pressed to survive the probable effects of global warming.
But mostly I enjoyed getting a better look at places way, way off the beaten track.

Beautiful book of the Arctic islands

There's not a lot on the Russian islands, but plenty of general information, gorgeous photography, and coverage of Ellesmore through Franz Josef. Some of the visits, photos, and information date back to the 1970s and 1980s, but change is relatively slow up north. Save for the climate change which features prominently in the book, but is not the primary theme.

Great informative book on the islands in the Arctic region!

Awesome volume on the Arctic. This book is very informative to the Arctic fan. Everything you wondered about the islands of the Arctic, you will find here (from the Canadian Arctic archipelago, through Greenland and the Svalbard islands of Norway, to the eastern Siberian arctic islands). And along with much interesting texts, this book is also filled with superb and colourful photographs. Many of them, breathtaking. You will find numerous photos of the beautiful landscapes from the air, human settlements, fauna & flora, to even geology and glacier formations, etc. You will understand the geography and geology of the islands, the varied climate in this vast region, the history about exploration, life at this high latitude - both humans & nature, and much more. This is truly a great collection! Well worth the money.
