About the Author
Donald T. Greenwood received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, and is a Professor Emeritus of aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Before joining the faculty at Michigan he worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, and has also held visiting positions at the University of Arizona, the University of California, San Diego, and ETH Zurich. He is the author of two previous books on dynamics.

A future classic

It is one of the best dynamics books that I know of. It is a text book as well as a reference book for Dynamicists. The main advantage of this book over other dynamics books are the following excellent and important chapters: differential approach and integral approach in formulation equations of motion, as well as a chapter on numerical methods for holonomic/non-holonomic constraints. As far as I know, all the main methods for deriving equations of motion are presented.
In general, this book concentrates on formulating equations of motion, for holonomic or non-holonomic systems. It should be named Advance Mechanics, since dynamics is usually associated, these days, with the field of non-linear dynamics. I assume that the author main reference was Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics by Papastavridis, which is more detailed and more mathematical. This book, however, is more readable, presents many illustrative examples, and still consistent, with no short cuts and preserves the mathematical beauty of this subject. I also like the use of few standard examples, as the standard knife-edge constraint, to demonstrate the various methods, and to compare between them. Again, the author not only presents the various methods, but also criticizes each one by complexity, applicability, etc. My only disappointment was the absence of tensor notation, which could save dozens of confusing sigmas.
The method presented include: the usage of quasi-coordinates, Maggis's equations, Boltzmann-Hammel equations, Gibbs-Appell equations, Kane's equations, and also a nice mathematical derivation and insight on the transpositional relations and Frobenius theorem.
I read it carefully, and found only few small typos; practically it is a typo free book.
I bet that this excellent book will became a classic on non-holonomic dynamics.

One of the best so far

I really enjoyed this book and working the problems in it. It has some truly unique features. To me this book is an attempt by the author to remedy some of the deficiencies in his earlier book Classical Dynamics. There is still no discussion of motion in a central force field or of vibrations but everything else is here. The sections on maintaining holonomic constraints during simulation and the sections on numerical methods are among the better I have seen on those subjects. There is also a rather through treatment of the basic vector mechanics that forms the basis of modern mechanics. Greenwood is not shy about attempting to level the playing field before starting out on the more modern subjects and provides the student with a ready compendium of examples, techniques, and results.
