About the Author
After many years teaching history at the universities of Papua New Guinea and Adelaide, Bill Gammage is now a Senior Research Fellow at the Australian National University. He is a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences and Deputy Chair of the National Museum of Australia. He has edited Australians- A Bicentennial History, 1938 and written an acclaimed history of Australian soldiers in the Great War, The Broken Years, to which this book is a fine successor.

It is an interesting anthropological record and historical record of something unique for the pre-WWII period.
The author did not really render a critique of his subjects; he entered their world perceptions and essentially shares them (which I do not quite). I briefly saw the main character, Jim Taylor, in 1986 and it allowed me to re-live some of my PNG experiences across decades.

About the Author
Donald T. Greenwood received his PhD from the California Institute of Technology, and is a Professor Emeritus of aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. Before joining the faculty at Michigan he worked for the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation, and has also held visiting positions at the University of Arizona, the University of California, San Diego, and ETH Zurich. He is the author of two previous books on dynamics.

A future classic

It is one of the best dynamics books that I know of. It is a text book as well as a reference book for Dynamicists. The main advantage of this book over other dynamics books are the following excellent and important chapters: differential approach and integral approach in formulation equations of motion, as well as a chapter on numerical methods for holonomic/non-holonomic constraints. As far as I know, all the main methods for deriving equations of motion are presented.
In general, this book concentrates on formulating equations of motion, for holonomic or non-holonomic systems. It should be named Advance Mechanics, since dynamics is usually associated, these days, with the field of non-linear dynamics. I assume that the author main reference was Tensor Calculus and Analytical Dynamics by Papastavridis, which is more detailed and more mathematical. This book, however, is more readable, presents many illustrative examples, and still consistent, with no short cuts and preserves the mathematical beauty of this subject. I also like the use of few standard examples, as the standard knife-edge constraint, to demonstrate the various methods, and to compare between them. Again, the author not only presents the various methods, but also criticizes each one by complexity, applicability, etc. My only disappointment was the absence of tensor notation, which could save dozens of confusing sigmas.
The method presented include: the usage of quasi-coordinates, Maggis's equations, Boltzmann-Hammel equations, Gibbs-Appell equations, Kane's equations, and also a nice mathematical derivation and insight on the transpositional relations and Frobenius theorem.
I read it carefully, and found only few small typos; practically it is a typo free book.
I bet that this excellent book will became a classic on non-holonomic dynamics.

One of the best so far

I really enjoyed this book and working the problems in it. It has some truly unique features. To me this book is an attempt by the author to remedy some of the deficiencies in his earlier book Classical Dynamics. There is still no discussion of motion in a central force field or of vibrations but everything else is here. The sections on maintaining holonomic constraints during simulation and the sections on numerical methods are among the better I have seen on those subjects. There is also a rather through treatment of the basic vector mechanics that forms the basis of modern mechanics. Greenwood is not shy about attempting to level the playing field before starting out on the more modern subjects and provides the student with a ready compendium of examples, techniques, and results.

This, her 11th and last collection of previously published reviews, doesn't pretend to be comprehensive for the period covered, yet does cover most major film releases. In what may be her best collection, her writing is less hyperbolic, her judgments more considered--yet her enthusiasm seems undimmed. As usual, she does not hesitate to go her own way; she pans both recent Oscar-winning films Rain Man and Dances with Wolves (the latter review provides the book's best line: "Costner has feathers in his hair and feathers in his head"). For most film collections.

This is Pauline Kael's 11th and final collection of the film reviews she wrote for The New Yorker, covering the period October 1988 to February 1991. In March 1991 the magazine quietly announced her retirement, due to the extent that the Parkinson's Disease she suffered from had incapacitated her. Her author's note begins wih a quote from Pound - "what thou lovest well remains" - which is an appropriate way to end the relationship she had with movies for over 2 decades, since her inspired reviews of movies of variable quality are Kael's heritage. Her praises here include Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Dangerous Liaisons, the doco Let's Get Lost, Batman, Casualties of War, My Left Foot, Drugstore Cowboy, The Grifters, The Fabulous Baker Boys, Vincent and Theo, and Enemies A Love Story. Her pans include Another Woman, Mississippi Burning, Rain Man, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Always, Postcards from the Edge, The Sheltering Sky, and The Bonfire of the Vanities. Some memorable quotes. Bird looks like he Clint Eastwood hadn't paid his Con Ed bill - the black actors are swallowed up in darkness. As Madame Sousatzka, Shirley MacLaine could be Norma Desmond's sma;;-town spinster sister. The reference in Beaches to the bad experience Bette Midler had on Jinxed! might have more impact if by then you weren't thinking back on Jinked! almostly fondly. People used to say that Gary Cooper was a fine actor - probably because when they looked in his face they were ready to give him their powder of attorney. In Born on the Fourth of July, Tom Cruise's hysteria is like a tennis pro falling to his knees and throwing his fists up in the air. A friend of mine broke up with his woman friend after they saw Dance with Wolves: she liked it. As soon as I got home from seeing it, I ran to the phone and warned him not to it with his new woman friend.

Kael's Last Hurrah!

This 6x9 350-page trade paperback edition of Ms. Kael's New Yorker film reviews, 85 compete reviews in all, is a very comfortable sized book for reading that has good-sized print also. Highly recommended for the film buff who wants incredible in-depth reviews of the major movies that came out from 1988-1991, the last period of Ms. Kael's wonderful career. For anyone who wants a really nice collection of her work that spans the 30 years from 1961 through 1991, however, I would recommend "For Keeps," her own selection of her best full-length reviews from her career. She is by far the most critical film critic I have encountered, and her reviews were generally not welcomed by film-makers and actors alike, but she was and is a wonder to behold as she dug down deep into movies to discover what merit they might deserve. When I first read her, she scared me off, but years later I came back to see if I had made a mistake, and I discovered that I had. I intend to keep her around and continue to learn from her.

About the Author
James C. Kaufman, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor at the California State University at San Bernardino, where he directs the Learning Research Institute. Dr Kaufman's research focuses on the nurturance, structure, and assessment of creativity. Kaufman is the author or editor of 15 books either published or in press. These include Essentials of Creativity Assessment (with Jonathan Plucker and John Baer, 2008), International Handbook of Creativity (with Robert J. Sternberg, Cambridge University Press, 2006), and Applied Intelligence (with Robert J. Sternberg and Elena Grigorenko, Cambridge University Press, 2008). His research has been featured on CNN, NPR, the New York Times, and the BBC. Kaufman is a founding co-editor of the official journal for APA's Division 10, Psychology, Aesthetics, and the Arts. He is also the associate editor of the Journal of Creativity Behavior and the incoming editor of the International Journal of Creativity and Problem Solving and is the series editor of the Psych 101 series. He received the 2003 Daniel E. Berlyne Award from APA's Division 10, as well as NAGC's E. Paul Torrance Award.

A book of friends. A celebration volume.

Intelligent Testing. Integrating Psychological Theory and Practice - A Tribute to Alan S. Kaufman by James Kaufman (2009, 252 pages) is what the Dutch - borrowing from Latin - call a Liber Amicorum, a Book of Friends, and the Germans - authentically - call eine Festschrift, a Celebration Volume. The book is all three. It is a tribute to the master rendered by his former students and younger colleagues, today well-known and influential psychologists in their own right, like Cecil Reynolds, Jack Naglieri, Dawn Flanagan and Elaine Fletcher-Janzen. These authors contribute to the book with original articles and research, or present historical overviews of assessement, Alan Kaufman's outstanding role in it, controversies and how they were dealt with. It is a book written by his friends, who, without exception, highlight the influence Alan Kaufman had on them both professionally and as humans. And, third, it is a celebration of the impact Alan Kaufman's work had and continues to have around the world, and does this exactly 30 years after the publication of his "Intelligent Testing with the WISC-R". It is a two-layered impact: first on the field of neuropsychological assessment, quantifying interpretation without loosing sight of the clinical aspects of clinical (neuro)psychology, and second, on the many children and adults tested throughout the world who profited from this professional approach.
Both between the lines and explicitly, the contributors make this book also a tribute to Nadeen, Alan Kaufman's spouse, colleague and test co-author. For those who have "Intelligent Testing with the WISC-R/ WISC-III" on their shelves and are interested in the person Alan Kaufman, the background and corollary of his work, I highly recommend this beautifully edited volume. A little disappointing, depending on what you're looking for

I bought this book because I read a lot of books on psychology AND I was introduced to looking at diverse themes through the "Pooh" world view when a friend suggested "The Tao of Pooh," by Benjamin Hoff. I got this book thinking it might be entertaining and illustrative as well.

It is entertaining for the first while, but generally not very illustrative. As the previous reviewer said, the more you know about schools of psychological theory the more you will enjoy the book. But if you are looking to either learn something about psychological theory OR looking for images and analogies that illustrate concepts in a striking or perceptive way, this is not the best book.

It is entertaining, but it can get old if you are not careful. The tone is very tongue-in-cheek, I had some good chuckles. The kick of the book is looking at the world of the Hundred Acre Wood through such over-the-top scholarly eyes. There is an "inside tone" to his dialog with the reader: sort of an "uninformed and unstudied individuals fail to appreciate this, but you and I can clearly see..." attitude runs through the entire book. I enjoyed that in the first few chapters, but after a while the joke got old. To be fair, I did read this in just a couple long sessions in just a couple days. It may be enjoyed more as a nightstand book where you read a chapter or two every few days.

In terms of learning anything new from the book, one is not likely to get more than a few nuggets of information about one theorist or another. The book is organized more by character and story than by psychological concept, so one never really gets to see a school of thought fleshed out in a way that enhances your understanding of it. But, if that's not why you're reading the book, you won't experience it as a short-coming.

It is a fun book, especially if you LOVE Pooh or psychology. If you love and know a lot about both this could be a good, light read to nibble on before bed or over lunch.

Great book for fall and a pumpkin patch trip!

I got this book years ago when teaching first grade. It has proven to be a classic with my students, their parents, and anyone willing to grow a pumpkin seed.

The text is straightforward, detailing the stages of growth, as well as how a pumpkin is used with the general public (i.e. at the pumpkin patch for purchase, the tactile adventure of choosing a pumpkin, and the fact that a farmer has worked all year to grow this piece of produce).

The photographs remind the reader that this is real. Some people can only read about a pumpkin patch, while others get to enjoy the actual experience.

I have used this book every year with my students to introduce them to the idea of pumpkin patches, but since we don't have any near us, we plant our own seeds in the classroom and watch these plants grow. The fascination that one day this little seed will be a jack-o-lantern is too much to watch. It's great fun and allows wonderful conversations at home and at school.

A Patch of Pleasure

I purchased The Pumpkin Patch a number of years ago and it is still one of my favorite fall books. The text is direct, going through the stages of pumpkin growth; from seed to harvest, for sale at the Pumpkin Patch, and carving into a jack o'lantern. The large, colorful photographs are a clear asset to the instructional value of the text. I now use this book every fall with primary (K through 3rd grade) students as we learn about pumpkins in the days before our own Pumpkin Patch field trip. It allows us to talk about sequencing (what happens first, next, etc.), how fruits grow from flowers, and the different varieties of pumpkins. The Pumpkin Patch is very educational for children (and adults!) old enough to understand the text and how the sequence of photographs relate to each other.
