The Muslim Empires of the Ottomans, Safavids, and Mughals (New Approaches to Asian History), by Stephen F. Dale

Between 1453 and 1526 Muslims founded three major states in the Mediterranean, Iran and South Asia: respectively the Ottoman, Safavid, and Mughal empires. By the early seventeenth century their descendants controlled territories that encompassed much of the Muslim world, stretching from the Balkans and North Africa to the Bay of Bengal and including a combined population of between 130 and 160 million people. This book is the first comparative study of the politics, religion, and culture of these three empires between 1300 and 1923. At the heart of the analysis is Islam, and how it impacted on the political and military structures, the economy, language, literature and religious traditions of these great empires. This original and sophisticated study provides an antidote to the modern view of Muslim societies by illustrating the complexity, humanity and vitality of these empires, empires that cannot be reduced simply to religious doctrine.

Review
'In sum, this is a vivid, learned, yet approachable comparative study of three remarkable Muslim empires at the height of their power and prestige, positioned carefully in their historical context. Scholars of the Islamic world used to believe that it reached its apogee in the early centuries after the Arab conquests, during the period of the early Abbasid caliphate. Dale's book provides ample grounds for suspecting that things may not be quite that simple.' David Morgan, The Times Literary Supplement

'Professor Dale deploys an impressive range of contemporary and modern sources in taking us through the intertwined history of the three empires.' Asian Affairs

least dense of the books for my middle eastern islamic history class, bearable and not too hard to get through. we did;t touch much on the mughals, but the parts comparing empires were very interesting (fall or ottomans vs fall of safavids, for example)

An Interesting Comparison
By S. Smith
Stephen Dale has written a largely narrative history that outlines and compares the rise and fall of the empires created by three Muslim dynasties: the Turkish Ottomans, Iranian Safavids, and Indian Mughals. At their height these ruled a vast area from the Balkans to Bengal, including parts of northern Africa and Central Asia, controlling substantial populations and much of the trade between Asia and Europe.

After an introductory chapter on the Islamic world before these states were formed, which shows their debt to their predecessors, Dale covers their history in the period from the 15th to the early 20th century. Within this, each empire rose, expanded, had a golden age and then declined. The Safavids were the shortest lived, being overthrown in the 17th century; the Mughals lost most of their power in the 18th century but lingered until the mid 19th; the Ottomans undertook reforms and lasted into the 20th century.

Dale shows that the three dynasties had much in common. As well as being Muslim, all had Turkic, partly military origins, efficient armies and, at least at the start, expansionist policies. All three were also strongly influenced by Persian language and culture. As well as summarising their political history and economy, he also discusses their art, architecture, and literature of the area. His book is well written in clear and accessible language, supported by a good number of illustrations and maps and a bibliography for further study.

There were differences between the three: both the Ottomans and the Mughals ruled substantial non-Muslim populations, and although the Safavid population was more homogeneous, they were much poorer and weaker than the other two. Each also empire faced its own internal and external problems, which Dale discusses. He also deals with the responses of their European, Hindu, and Chinese neighbours to their initial expansion and later weaknesses, and relates the history of the three dynasties not only to each other but the wider context of world history.

The coverage of the Mughal Empire seems the most thorough, although the Ottomans are discussed at reasonable length; there is less on the Safavids. The book concentrates on narrative description rather than analysis. Apart from these points, Dale has produced a very good, up to date narrative summary of the three empires for those with a general interest in them.

Excellent information, useful maps and bibliography, text a bit of a slog to get through.
By lyndonbrecht
This book deals with three Muslim empires, not all of them. Dale's book is a kind of comparative summary that offers a great deal of information. The text is informative, but it is a bit of a chore to get through the book. The maps are good and the bibliography is excellent. This would be a good book to browse as an overview, but a reader new to the topic might think the sometimes labored prose is typical, and abandon it. To readers not so familiar, the Safavids were Persian (the empire larger than what is now Iran); the Mughals ruled much of India until the British ended their last claims to rule by defeating a massive rebellion in India in the 1850s; and the Ottomans, based in what is now Turkey, lasted until 1918.

Being, Nature, and Life in Aristotle: Essays in Honor of Allan GotthelfFrom Cambridge University Press

This volume of essays explores major connected themes in Aristotle's metaphysics, philosophy of nature, and ethics, especially themes related to essence, definition, teleology, activity, potentiality, and the highest good. The volume is united by the belief that all aspects of Aristotle's work need to be studied together if any one of the areas of thought is to be fully understood. Many of the papers were contributions to a conference at the University of Pittsburgh entitled 'Being, Nature, and Life in Aristotle', to honor Professor Allan Gotthelf's many contributions to the field of ancient philosophy; a few are contributions from those who were invited but could not attend. The contributors, all longstanding friends of Professor Gotthelf, are among the most accomplished scholars in the field of ancient philosophy today.

Review
"....This outstanding collection of ten essays pays handsome tribute to Allan Gotthelf for his many years at the center of scholarship on Aristotelian philosophy of biology and science.... A glance at the list of contributing authors suffices to recommend this book in its entirety to specialists. A thorough reading should convince any remaining skeptics how fruitful it is.... The use of footnotes and a comprehensive bibliography are wise editorial choices.... Supplementary materials succinctly and helpfully summarize Gotthelf's life and work in classical philosophy...."

Essays exploring the role of teleology in every aspect of Aristotle's thought
By Ash Ryan
Dr. Lennox has put together a worthy collection of essays in honor of Dr. Gotthelf. Especially interesting is a common thread running through the various lines of research of how we need to understand Aristotle's teleology in order to understand not only his ethics and politics, but also his metaphysics, biology, and methodology.

This book offers a oral history of pro-life direct activism in America from the late 1970s through the early 1990s. Through the stories of leaders and followers, men and women, Catholics and evangelicals, Carol Maxwell explores the complex beliefs and desires that gave rise to this activism, sustained, and eventually undid it. She offers a unique view of the minds of individual protestors and an important account of the direct action movement--as its initial commitment to Ghandian non-violence was broken down by the lethal acts that accompanied its end.

An Exploration of the Motives Of "Rescuers"
By Melanie Z.
This book was very insightful. It discussed the reasons why people participated in pro-life direct action (which basically means sit ins and blockades at the abortion clinics) there were times when I thought the author was analyzing too much, that people simply wanted to save babies(as they interpreted the situation) - and there weren't deep personal reasons, but what the author came up with was very interesting. She described the differences between the reasons men and women got involved, and the different ways that they looked at activism. One thing to note was that 60% of the activists were women, which goes against the common perception that the majority of pro-lifers active in the movement are men. The book gave in-depth analysis of the reasons why people became active in "rescuing" and the reasons why they left activism. One thing that came out of the study is that all of the pro-lifers were religious, though some are motivated by secular reasoning more than religious reasoning. Catholics and Protestants were both represented in the samples.

Powerful personal computers have resulted in an explosion of e-banking, e-commerce and e-mail, and as a consequence the encryption of communications to ensure security has become a matter of public interest and importance. This book describes and analyzes many cipher systems ranging from the earliest and elementary to the most recent and sophisticated, such as RSA and DES, as well as wartime machines such as the ENIGMA and Hagelin, and ciphers used by spies. Security issues and possible methods of attack are discussed and illustrated by examples. The design of many systems involves advanced mathematical concepts and this is explained in detail in a major appendix. This book will appeal to anyone interested in codes and ciphers as used by private individuals, spies, governments and industry throughout history and right up to the present day.

well written and for all

This is not a schoolbook, yet it takes from the format some usefull features for such a book : you have some worked out examples and a few exercises to practice. After all, math is not something you read like a novel, but rather something you DO! The author understands that.
But the book also has an easy going feel to it and is very clear. Mixed in with the math, you have tidbits of history and general culture mixed in. If you compare it to a very good book out there (the code book by Singh), you find out more about the codes and the mechanics of them in this book.
good read!

Survey of Ciphers
By Kimball O'Hara
It's a good book if you have an interest in ciphers and haven't read much on the subject. It's not a book on modern cryptography and covers very little in the way of recent breakthrough technology. Based on your level of interest and experience it might or might not be the right book for you. It gets four stars from me because the author presents clear, well researched information.

Blame Welfare, Ignore Poverty and Inequality, by Joel F. Handler, Yeheskel Hasenfeld

With the passage of the 1996 welfare reform, not only welfare, but poverty and inequality have disappeared from the political discourse. The decline in the welfare rolls has been hailed as a success. This book challenges that assumption. It argues that while many single mothers left welfare, they have joined the working poor, and fail to make a decent living. The book examines the persistent demonization of poor single-mother families; the impact of the low-wage market on perpetuating poverty and inequality; and the role of the welfare bureaucracy in defining deserving and undeserving poor. It argues that the emphasis on family values - marriage promotion, sex education and abstinence - is misguided and diverts attention from the economic hardships low-income families face. The book proposes an alternative approach to reducing poverty and inequality that centers on a children's allowance as basic income support coupled with jobs and universal child care.

Review
"This book challenges the conventional wisdom that welfare reform "worked." Handler and Hasenfeld, well-known experts in this field, contest that view, bringing to bear a wealth of data on poverty, inequality, and welfare policy. They conclude that welfare reform was built around "myths" regarding the individual deviance of the poor. Instead, they argue that structural conditions in society and the economy are the underlying sources of poverty and inequality and must be addressed with new policy solutions. This book is essential reading for anyone concerned with these crucial issues."
--Evelyn Z. Brodkin, Associate Professor, School of Social Service Administration, The University of Chicago

"This is an enormously valuable work, bringing together historical perspective, extensive knowledge and a wide range of research findings in support of a forceful argument that our nation needs to move beyond debates about welfare reform and make a major commitment to addressing poverty and inequality."
--Mark Greenberg, Executive Director, Task Force on Poverty, Center for American Progress

"There is a broad consensus across most of the political spectrum that the 1996 welfare reform successfully ended welfare as we knew it...the welfare rolls were cut in half, more single mothers entered the labor force, and child poverty fell modestly. Handler and Hasenfeld challenge this conventional wisdom and emphasize instead that welfare reform is no substitute for antipoverty policies. They propose that government provide a basic income for families with children, reform the low-wage labor market, improve child care and expand community-based services so that we can end poverty as we still know it. Anyone interested in the future of social welfare policy should read this book."
--Sheldon Danziger, H. J. Meyer Distinguished University Professor of Public Policy, University of Michigan

"There is much to be recommended in this book. It brings together an extensive body of research findings to make the case that the U.S. needs to move beyond current contentions over welfare reform and make a strong commitment to reducing poverty and inequality. The authors are especially good at exposing the myths about welfare programs and welfare recipients. They also provide an excellent exposition of the internal workings of welfare bureaucracies as well as the many reasons why welfare programs generate widespread public opposition but rarely achieve their intended goals. Assertions relevant to the issues under discussion are amply supported with references to studies and articles that represent the state of contemporary scholarship. And, anyone interested in the innerconnectedness of poverty issues and the major alternatives to our current social welfare policy should read this book."
--American Review of Politics

"highly valuable book....The table of acronyms thoughtfully provided at the beginning of this book is a definite help....the authors do an effective job of interweaving changes in policy with the changing demographics of poverty in the United States....provide a clear and useful explanation of the difference between entitlement programs....this material would be of value to students either of US welfare policy or of changes in social stratification....this volume presents a valuable supply."
--Kathleen C. Martin, Boston University, Journal of Social History

Repeated Failures
By Leah
The authors have important things to say about poverty in the United States. One is that we citizens need to stop obsessing over the incredibly few individuals who will take advantage of any welfare program we can devise, and instead we need to start looking at the increasing numbers of genuinely struggling individuals who need a bit of assistance.

The United States' policies for dealing with poverty have not worked to reduce poverty. Based on flawed premises, they never have worked to reduce poverty and never will. When something isn't working, it's time to try something new. These authors point the way.

From Publishers Weekly
Liberally studded with sophisticated paintings and miniatures, this comprehensive trove of Arthuriana will delight young readers with a taste for history. Crossley-Holland (Storm) utilizes an encyclopedia-like format, devoting a few pages to "Knights, Knighthood and Chivalry," a spread to "The Thirteen Treasures of Britain," a page to the Crusades, etc. He introduces key characters, describes daily life for lords and ladies and their servants; he quotes Chaucer on outfitting a knight, and gives lessons from the Book of Nurture on being a proper butler ("Never huff and puff bad breath up your master's nose"). The eminently browsable structure meets its match in Crossley-Holland's dramatic prose style: "Powerful and attractive, mysterious, vulnerable, and vengefulAlike lake waters, the Lady of the Lake is all of these things." Elsewhere, he describes Geoffrey of Monmouth's History as "a kind of best-selling, patriotic, historical novel." Malone (The Magic Flute) borrows medieval and Renaissance subjects and compositions, but while his palette is rich with blues and greens and golds, his sensibility is definitely contemporary, particularly his use of space. Lavish with detail, both his full-spread paintings and his spot illustrations are ripe with mystery and romance. If ever a book could ignite a passion for Camelot, this is it. Ages 10-up. (Oct.)

From School Library Journal
Grade 5 Up-The perennial fascination with the stories of King Arthur and his knights dates from the early Middle Ages and continues to the present. In this volume, Crossley-Holland has gathered bits of the legends and pieces of medieval writing to immerse readers in images from the Matter of Britain. He begins with short essays on knighthood, chivalry, and Geoffrey of Monmouth, the 12th-century Welsh priest who first wrote of Arthur, but there is no clear organization to the rest of the volume. Gawain, Guinevere, Lancelot, Mordred, and Merlin all have a few pages devoted to them, interspersed with essays that cover food and clothing, the Crusades, courtly love, etc. All are profusely illustrated in bright color with full-page pictures or page decorations. Occasional snippets of medieval writing such as carols, poems, or "how to" advice on dressing a lord or serving as a butler lend variety to the writing, but seem to be placed randomly throughout the text. The last piece discusses the difficulty of uncovering the "Historical Arthur," a figure from a much earlier time than the stories that place him in the medieval period. An index aids in finding specific pieces. This volume serves as a companion to any version of the stories, for those who want to sort out characters and for background information as they read.

King Arthur Lives.....
By Roz Levine
For those entranced by the magical stories of King Arthur, Excalibur, the Sword in the Stone, Lancelot, Guinevere, and the Knights of the Round Table, Kevin Crossley-Holland has written the quintessential book detailing the life and times of this charismatic hero and his court. Beautifully and painstakingly researched, and rich in history, trivia, fun facts, anecdotes, and legend, Mr Crossley-Holland brings medieval England and Camelot to life. Hear the many stories, among them Merlin, The Sword in the Stone, the Lady of the Lake, Sir Mordred, Marie de France, and Morgan le Fay. Learn the ways of the court and castle life, dressing, arms and armor, tournaments and tilting, love, quests and adventures, magic and magicians, troubadours, art, and so much more. His engaging and entertaining text is enhanced by Peter Malone's marvelously vivid artwork, and together these two transport the reader back in time to the enchanting world of chivalrous knights, lovely and fair maidens, and evil villains. Perfect for young lovers of the Arthurian legend, 12 and older, who have begun to ask the hard questions..."Did King Arthur exist? Was there really a court called Camelot? Where exactly was Arthur's kingdom? When did he rule? And what was he like?" Kevin Crossley-Holland gives the definitive answer..."To begin with, we scarcely need to know. When we first meet Arthur, we are caught up in a long dream we hope will never end." The legend lives. Believe and Enjoy!

The magic and romance of King Arthur and his court.
By Nancy K. Jacobson
The World of King Arthur is an outstanding companion book for anyone interested in the Arthurian legends. The beautifully written entries explain the who, what, when and where of the Arthurian world.,(like, the difference between the sword-in-the stone and Excalibur, or what is known of the historical Arthur.) Also, scattered through the book are delightful nuggets like Kiss Me, How to be a Butler, Verb that Carving, In the the Midnight Garden. Translated from original sources they are wonderful windows into the medieval world. The illustrations are rich, inventive and instinctive. An absolutely gorgeous book, a delight to read and to look at, a must for Arthur fans.

Constitutionalism affirms the idea that democracy should not lead to the violation of human rights or the oppression of minorities. This book aims to explore the relationship between constitutional law and feminism. The contributors offer a spectrum of approaches and the analysis is set across a wide range of topics, including both familiar ones like reproductive rights and marital status, and emerging issues such as a new societal approach to household labor and participation of women in constitutional discussions online. The book is divided into six parts: I) feminism as a challenge to constitutional theory; II) feminism and judging; III) feminism, democracy, and political participation; IV) the constitutionalism of reproductive rights; V) women's rights, multiculturalism, and diversity; and VI) women between secularism and religion.

Review
"Should a feminist constitutionalism exist, or a dialogue on constitutionalism that took feminist insights seriously, this book would be part of it. As things are, it calmly challenges limits and unsettles complacency by exceeding its own envelope, putting more solid ground under women's feet as it expands law's horizons."
- Catharine A. MacKinnon
From the foreword of Feminist Constitutionalism

"Feminist Constitutionalism offers a radically new perspective on the very foundations of our legal systems, going beyond 'feminism and the law' to assess the texts and traditions of the world's constitutions through the lens of gender justice. This latest contribution to a burgeoning new field draws together leading legal scholars from around the world, lifting us out of our legal parochialism, and confronting the masculine practices and assumptions of constitutional law. It is sweeping in scope, and eclectic in the best sense of the word. How, the authors ask, can constitutionalism be reconfigured to serve the interests of gender equality? In answering this question, this volume opens a window on a landscape that has long been overlooked. Every reader - whether feminist or not - will learn much from this book's engagement with the radical idea that constitutions are not gender-neutral."
Helen Irving
Professor of Law, The University of Sydney

"If dignity, liberty and equality shall make sense in our complicated worlds, and if democracy shall work in multilevel constellations of constitutional law, then this book is an important contribution towards it. A feminist intervention that deserves the name, diverse, transnational, and with a grip on the hard cases, this work proves to be a very inspiring read."

- Susanne Baer
Richterin des Bundesverfassungsgerichts, Professorin für Öffentliches Recht und Geschlechterstudien an der, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin & James W Cook Professor, University of Michigan Law School

Christ and Horrors: The Coherence of Christology (Current Issues in Theology), by Marilyn McCord Adams

Who would the Saviour have to be, what would the Saviour have to do to rescue human beings from the meaning-destroying experiences of their lives? This book offers a systematic Christology that is at once biblical and philosophical. Starting with human radical vulnerability to horrors such as permanent pain, sadistic abuse or genocide, it develops what must be true about Christ if He is the horror-defeater who ultimately resolves all the problems affecting the human condition and Divine-human relations. Distinctive elements of Marilyn McCord Adams' study are her defence of the two-natures theory, of Christ as Inner Teacher and a functional partner in human flourishing, and her arguments in favour of literal bodily resurrection (Christ's and ours) and of a strong doctrine of corporeal Eucharistic presence. The book concludes that Christ is the One in Whom, not only Christian doctrine, but cosmos, church, and the human psyche hold together.

Review
"The reader who works through Adam's tightly woven argument and vivid illustrations to the conclusion of Christ and Horrors will surely appreciate the philosophical and theological reason that she brings to the centrality of the 'bread and wine of Christ's humanity, scarred by crucifixion, glorified by resurrection' and her profound faith--even in light (or darkness) of the worst horrors--that 'consummate horror-defeat in all three stages will complete the consecration of the whole material creation and of its best fruit, humankind' (313)." - Sally Stamper, The University of Chicago Divinity School, Chicago, Illinois

"[A] rich and provocative read."
The Thomist, Ralph Del Colle, Marquette University

Marilyn McCord Adams is Regius Professor of Divinity, University of Oxford and Canon of Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford. She has published extensively in academic philosophy and theology.

Quick Review
By Jose "SuperCharger" Rias
I had been developing software for about 10 years... and am just finishing up a grad degree in CS after going back to school... If found this book to be a LOT better than all the hand outs that my prof put together... It's a great book to give you an overview of all the problems in mobile computing... and a lot of the answers... (not all :-)). As the other reviewer says, it's priced a bit high at $85.00, but I found it to be well worth the price I paid... hopefully the prof takes my recommendation and uses it as the text book for future classes...

My View on Mobile Application Principles
By Taka Ai
Please excuse English. This is a very good book for learning mobile applications in US and Europe. Also, a lot of good new things on UML and XML. But, I would have liked to see more on the Japanese Mobile development. I think this is good as a text book in class room or reference. I would like to have more introductions to UML than 1 chapter. The UML is more advanced in this book. Also lot of good location and voice informations.

The Internet in the Workplace: How New Technology Is Transforming Work, by Patricia Wallace

The Internet, and all the netcentric innovations that emerge from it, have transformed the workplace and our working lives in a very short time. The net added a window to the world on worker's desks, and made 24 by 7 connectivity to the workplace a reality--blurring the line between work and time off. It triggered new styles of teamwork, new leadership challenges, new modes of communicating, new job roles and employer-employee relationships, and new, alarmingly effective tools for workplace surveillance. The capabilties offered by netcentric technologies might seem to eliminate completely the need for a physical workplace, but the workplace remains, partly because the virtual, and in fact, the physical appearance of a typical office looks about the same. Nevertheless, the psychological characteristics of the workplace have changed considerably. Workers, from the mail room clerk to the CEO, are learning new skills--to employ on the net's power but avoid the egregious blunders that the net so dramatically amplifies. In The Internet in the Workplace, Patricia Wallace demonstrates how netcentric technologies touch every kind of workplace, and explores the challenges and dilemmas they create. Patricia Wallace is Director, Information Technology and Distance Programs at the Center for Talented Youth, Johns Hopkins University. Wallace's background and career span the disciplines of information technology, psychology, education, and business. Her recent book, The Psychology of the Internet (Cambridge, 1999) has been translated into nine languages. Wallace's work has been featured often in the media, including MSNBC, CNN, ABC News, the BBC, NPR, USA Today, and the Washington Post.

Very good book for programmers like me
By Bovlk
Being a long-time computer programmer, I really appreciated this book. It's written with a good understanding of the technical background and provided me with a lot of knowledge of the associated psychological, social, legal and other aspects of using internet in the workplace, as well as links to further study them. Personally, I found two parts the most interesting. The first is the discussion of media richness, i.e. the differences between e.g. text messages, email, phone calls, video calls or personal meetings, with text messages missing many clues like voice tone, urgency etc., or even facial gestures in case of video conferences. The second is the discussion of psychology of virtual teams that seldom, if ever meet personally, and the requirements for such teams to succeed. Both reminded me to buy a webcam, which allowed me to use facial and even hand gestures in talks - something I found I was really lacking in the long Skype calls with others.

The book also provides many, many interesting links. Although some of them may be outdated by now, it at least gave me glance on where to look for further study.
