Review
"An essential study for those interested in Richardson, best known for her Australian novels The Getting of Wisdom and The Fortunes of Richard Mahony, this comprehensive, detailed portrait of an elusively private woman is also a fascinating read about a life that bridged the end of the century into the advent of the Great War." - English Literature in Transition, Nadine Cooper, University of North Carolina at Greensboro

From the Back Cover
Henry Handel Richardson is one of Australia's major novelists, and one of the most elusive. An expatriate for most of her life, she worked hard to maintain her privacy, and to conceal her personal views behind an impartial authorial style. This study explores the well-springs of her fiction, her abiding concerns and the intellectual heritage that informs her major writing. An overview of her life is provided, and all her fiction discussed. The study focuses on her engagement with the sexual politics of the time, on inherited concerns, and on contemporary theories of gender. The influence on her fiction of writers as diverse as Hoffmann and Wedekind, Weininger, Freud and Schopenhauer, is demonstrated. Ackland locates Richardson's work within a tradition of European thought, while also showing why she is of central importance to Australian and women's studies.

About the Author
Michael Ackland is the author of Henry Kendall: the Man and the Myths and Damaged Men: the Precarious Lives of James McAuley and Harold Stewart. He was educated in Australia and Germany, where he attended secondary school and studied German literature at the University of Cologne. Currently he is Head of the English Department at Monash University.

Causality, Measurement Theory and the Differentiable Structure of Space-Time (Cambridge Monographs on Mathematical Physics), by R. N. Sen

Introducing graduate students and researchers to mathematical physics, this book discusses two recent developments: the demonstration that causality can be defined on discrete space-times; and Sewell's measurement theory, in which the wave packet is reduced without recourse to the observer's conscious ego, nonlinearities or interaction with the rest of the universe. The definition of causality on a discrete space-time assumes that space-time is made up of geometrical points. Using Sewell's measurement theory, the author concludes that the notion of geometrical points is as meaningful in quantum mechanics as it is in classical mechanics, and that it is impossible to tell whether the differential calculus is a discovery or an invention. Providing a mathematical discourse on the relation between theoretical and experimental physics, the book gives detailed accounts of the mathematically difficult measurement theories of von Neumann and Sewell.

Review
"Sen has written a superb book. It should be of special interest to any serious senior undergraduate or graduate student in theoretical physics, and to mathematical physicists and mathematicians working in quantum theory, quantum field theory, relativity, or the foundations of physics."
Howard E. Brandt, Mathematical Reviews

"A great deal of interesting historical material is included in these pages, some of it hard to find elsewhere, and the author assists his readers considerably by providing extensive mathematical appendices, within which many basic results are derived. For these reasons, and taking into account the fundamental importance of the subject matter, I would consider that the book has a good claim for a place on library shelves."
Dr. Peter J. Bussey, Contemporary Physics

"Sen has written a superb book."
Howard E. Brandt, MAA Reviews

Modern Australia was in part defined by its early embrace of China—a turning from the White Australia Policy of the 1950s to the country's acceptance of Asian immigration and engagement with regional neighbours. It saw the far-sighted establishment of an embassy in Beijing in the 1970s by Gough Whitlam, headed by Stephen FitzGerald. Here, FitzGerald's story as diplomat, China scholar, adviser to Gough Whitlam, first ambassador to China under prime ministers Whitlam and Malcolm Fraser, is interwoven with the wider one of this dramatic moment in Australia's history. Comrade Ambassador also highlights the challenge Australia faces in managing itself into an Asian future.

Breaking Rockefeller: The Incredible Story of the Ambitious Rivals Who Toppled an Oil Empire, by Peter B. Doran

The incredible tale of how ambitious oil rivals Marcus Samuel, Jr., and Henri Deterding joined forces to topple the Standard Oil empire

Marcus Samuel, Jr., is an unorthodox Jewish merchant trader. Henri Deterding is a take-no-prisoners oilman. In 1889, John D. Rockefeller is at the peak of his power. Having annihilated all competition and possessing near-total domination of the market, even the U.S. government is wary of challenging the great “anaconda” of Standard Oil. The Standard never loses—that is until Samuel and Deterding team up to form Royal Dutch Shell.

A riveting account of ambition, oil, and greed, Breaking Rockefeller traces Samuel’s rise from outsider to the heights of the British aristocracy, Deterding’s conquest of America, and the collapse of Rockefeller’s monopoly. The beginning of the twentieth century is a time when vast fortunes were made and lost. Taking readers through the rough and tumble of East London’s streets, the twilight turmoil of czarist Russia, to the halls of the British Parliament, and right down Broadway in New York City, Peter Doran offers a richly detailed, fresh perspective on how Samuel and Deterding beat the world’s richest man at his own game.

Review
“Breaking Rockefeller emulates the best oil literature, in which geology and geopolitics go hand in hand.” —The Wall Street Journal

“[Marcus Samuel and Henri Deterding’s] story, though not new, is grippingly retold in Breaking Rockefeller. . . . The guts, greed and gusto of this cast of characters are what give the book its vigor. . . . The book is timely in an era when America’s shale revolution has upset the OPEC cartel’s efforts to control the world’s oil markets, and Eastern Europe struggles to free its gas markets from dependence on Russia’s Gazprom. It is a vivid reminder of the dangers of monopolies, and of the merits of no-holds barred competition and technological upheaval.” —The Economist

“Why haven’t you heard [Marcus Samuel’s] full story before? Because his history is more elusive than a shell game: He had all of his papers and correspondence burned. Now Doran has gathered enough secondary evidence to tell his tale.” —The New York Post (a must-read book of the week)

“In Breaking Rockefeller, author and energy expert Peter B. Doran tells the story of an unlikely partnership that dared to take on—and take down—Rockefeller. . . . [A] well-researched history.” —The Fort Worth Star-Telegram

“Doran has written a vastly entertaining book.” —The St. Louis Post-Dispatch

“An expansive and engaging overview of the first tumultuous decades of the oil industry. His vigorous prose and persuasive narrative manage to capture all of the major players and events of that industry’s first 50 years . . . I used to tell readers who want to understand the history of the oil industry to read famed oil historian Daniel Yergin’s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Prize. I still do. But now I say that they should read Doran’s Breaking Rockefeller too. It really is a ripping nonfiction yarn that illuminates the oil industry’s formative years.” —Bizmology

“[A] lively history of the early petroleum industry. . . . Doran's vigorous narrative conveys the drama of the oil industry in its heroic days, featuring grueling stretches of dry wells followed by marathon gushers; lurid, greedy oil boomtowns; and the wars, revolutions, and production gluts that made the business a roller-coaster. He's also good at untangling the underlying dynamics of finance, marketing, technology, and transportation. The result is an entertaining portrait of the oil industry's past and the business forces that still shape its present.” —Publishers Weekly

“[Doran’s] main accomplishment is his illumination of the saga of how Marcus Samuel Jr. and Henri Deterding became rivals in the world oil trade and then, around the turn of the century, found enough common interest to attack the Standard Oil juggernaut from Japan, Russia, and elsewhere outside the U.S. . . . A readable popular history told largely through the actions of swashbuckling tycoons.” —Kirkus Reviews

“Doran is a gifted writer and storyteller; his first-rate history and introduction to the petroleum business…delivers a page-turner sure to appeal to economists, historians, political scientists, and general readers interested in global economics.” —Library Journal

“Peter Doran’s Breaking Rockefeller is the best kind of history, telling great stories, providing fascinating detail, and reflecting real knowledge. In this story of the origins of the modern oil industry, there are plenty of lessons for the present too.” —Anne Applebaum, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Gulag: A History and Iron Curtain: The Crushing of Eastern Europe 1944–1956

“Peter Doran’s enthralling account of the early days of the oil industry—particularly the mano-a-mano battle between a Jewish merchant in England and the original industry titan, John D. Rockefeller—reads like a thriller without sacrificing good solid scholarship.  With some relevant observations for our own time, this is a gem of a book.” —Robert Kagan, New York Times bestselling author of Of Paradise and Power and The World America Made

“Peter Doran tells a riveting and exciting account of the formation of Royal Dutch Shell and how it managed to stand up to Standard Oil at the turn of the 19th century. With color and delight, he has captured the nature of the oil business at the time in this well-researched volume.” —Anders Åslund, Senior Fellow, Atlantic Council

“Breaking Rockefeller is fast-paced yet anchored by a treasure of fascinating detail. It is an insightful historical backgrounder for today's global energy politics.” —Robert D. Kaplan, Senior Fellow, Center for a New American Security and author of In Europe's Shadow

An Unlikely Oil Baron
By David Shulman
Peter Doran tells the story of Marcus Samuel Jr. a Jewish 19th century trader who rises from the hard scrabble neighborhood of Houndsditch, London to the heights of the global oil business and a high peerage in the Court of Saint James. Doran’s book is in the tradition of Daniel Yergin’s “The Prize” and Anthony Sampson’s “The Seven Sisters” and is filled with the high drama of the early years of the oil industry. The oil business of 1900 was far different than today. Rockefeller’s Standard Oil dominated the industry like no other and kerosene, not gasoline was its main product.

However change was in the wind. The oil production capital was moving from the depleted oilfields of the United States to the booming Baku oil fields of Russia. There the Nobel Brothers and the Rothschild’s were beginning to upset Rockefeller’s hold on the global oil market. Into this milieu comes Marcus Samuel. He has the strategic vision to move Russian oil through the Suez Canal to the Asian markets he knew so well.

The one problem was that the Suez Canal, for safety reasons, refused to allow oil tankers to enter the canal. It here where Samuel has designed and built a double-hulled tanker that convinces the canal officials to allow passage. Of a sudden, Standard Oil was threatened with cheap Russian oil in Asia under the name of Shell Transport and Trading, the Shell Oil name of today.

Competing with Samuel in Asia was Henri Deterding’s Rothschild backed Royal Dutch. Using geological science Deterding discovers a gusher in Sumatra that underprices Shell. After several years of competing with each other Deterding gains the upper hand by forcing a merger with Shell that forms Royal Dutch/Shell Group of today based on a 60/40 split favoring Royal Dutch.

This combination along with the anti-trust beak-up of Standard Oil in 1911 ends Rockefeller’s grip over the global oil business. Doran’s theme throughout is as his title suggests is breaking Rockefeller and the monopoly he represented. He ends his story with the death of Samuel in 1928, but in the same year Royal Dutch/Shell joins up with Standard Oil and other oil majors with Achnacarry and Red Line Agreements which effectively cartelizes the global oil industry, so much for competitive markets.

Doran is a good story teller whose work was handicapped by the burning of most of Samuel’s files at his death. Although he takes a few side trips away from his basic story, he holds the reader’s interest throughout.

Development of Royal Dutch Shell and the challenge of Standard Oil
By Steven Peterson
A fascinating book. John D. Rockefeller had established the Standard Oil Company, which used its near monopoly power to dominate the oil market in the United States. This book is a study in how two entrepreneurs--competitiros at times and collaborators at other times--entered the American market and competed with Standard Oil. The success of the new group--Royal Dutch Shell--was a bit less than met the eye, but it was surely an important event in American oil business and policy and politics.

The progenitors of Royal Dutch Shell. . .Marcus Samuel began with developing a plan of action for oil from Baku and other sites in Russia. Thus became, over time, Shell Oil. Then, Henri Deterding, who used oil from Southeast Asia to create what became known as Royal Dutch. While they were working to develop their separate enterprises, Other figures were involved in the picture--such as the Rothschild family.

With the development of oil tankers that could traverse the Suez Canal, Samuels experienced a breakthrough. Over time, he and Deterding developed a prickly business relationship.

In the United States, Standard Oil was torn apart under the aegis of antitrust laws. At a point in time, Royal Dutrh Shell entered the American market and succeeded. Calling this a Rockefeller "breaking" is a bit off target, since Standard Oil had been weakened by government action. Nonetheless, a fascinating book about oil politics and business. . . .

Distance, geography, risk, technology & greed
By Lynn Lyon
It all started with a hashtag - #LNG. I was introduced to Peter Doran on Twitter with a mutual interest in natural gas. His tweets are insightful but limited with 140 characters. He is a gifted thinker and author. He educates and entertains with this story that looks at the challenges of distance, geography, risk, technology and greed.

I love this book. Every chapter was my new favorite through the final pages. Peter is an excellent story teller in writing and in person. Breaking Rockefeller provides a depth of knowledge with personal context for Rockefeller, Samuel & Deterding.

This story needs to be told. The energy, innovation and associated wealth of this era deserve a spotlight. I hope we see a blockbuster movie based on the book. The tale of the Titanic is a small story compared to the tale of the Murex. The Big Short is nothing compared to The Big Monopoly ran by the wealthiest man in the world.

I love this story and Peter's book. I sent my Dad a copy and look forward to getting his perspective too.

Doesn't work in Mac OS X Lion
By Md A. Ur Rahman
This doesn't work in Mac OS X Lion. I have a Snow Leopard system and it works fine as it can execute PPC code. But in the new system, it fails. It should be updated for the 3rd edition soon! I'm giving it a 5 stars based on my experience where it works.

Good as a reference
By J. Smithe
Really not that great. It's very outdated and only provides pretty basic overviews of each topic. That said, the price is great since it's basically an entire textbook saved on the disk. You'l need further explanation for most topics, but as a reference piece, this is a good source.

Statistical Physics of Fields, by Mehran Kardar

While many scientists are familiar with fractals, fewer are familiar with scale-invariance and universality which underlie the ubiquity of their shapes. These properties may emerge from the collective behaviour of simple fundamental constituents, and are studied using statistical field theories. Initial chapters connect the particulate perspective developed in the companion volume, to the coarse grained statistical fields studied here. Based on lectures taught by Professor Kardar at MIT, this textbook demonstrates how such theories are formulated and studied. Perturbation theory, exact solutions, renormalization groups, and other tools are employed to demonstrate the emergence of scale invariance and universality, and the non-equilibrium dynamics of interfaces and directed paths in random media are discussed. Ideal for advanced graduate courses in statistical physics, it contains an integrated set of problems, with solutions to selected problems at the end of the book and a complete set available to lecturers at www.cambridge.org/9780521873413.

Review
In this much-needed modern text, Kardar presents a remarkably clear view of statistical mechanics as a whole, revealing the relationships between different parts of this diverse subject. In two volumes, the classical beginnings of thermodynamics are connected smoothly to a thoroughly modern view of fluctuation effects, stochastic dynamics, and renormalization and scaling theory. Students will appreciate the precision and clarity in which difficult concepts are presented in generality and by example. I particularly like the wealth of interesting and instructive problems inspired by diverse phenomena throughout physics (and beyond!), which illustrate the power and broad applicability of statistical mechanics.
Leon Balents, Department of Physics, University of California, Santa Barbara

"... Statistical Physics of Fields is the welcome result of an innovative and popular graduate course Kardar has been teaching at MIT for almost twenty years. It is a masterful account of the essentials of a subject which played a vital role in the development of twentieth century physics ... Statistical Physics of Fields builds on the foundation laid by the Statistical Physics of Particles, with an account of the revolutionary developments of the past 35 years, many of which were facilitated by renormalization group ideas. Much of the subject matter is inspired by problems in condensed matter physics, with a number of pioneering contributions originally due to Kardar himself."
David R Nelson, Arthur K Solomon Professor of Biophysics, Harvard University

"If Landau and Lifshitz were to prepare a new edition of their classic Statistical Physics text they might produce a book not unlike this gem by Mehran Kardar. Indeed, Kardar is an extremely rare scientist, being both brilliant in formalism and an astoundingly careful and thorough teacher. He demonstrates both aspects of his range of talents in this pair of books, which belong on the bookshelf of every serious student of theoretical statistical physics."
H Eugene Stanley, Director, Center for Polymer Studies, Boston University

"This is one of the most valuable textbook I have seen in a long time. Written by a leader in the field, it provides a crystal clear, elegant and comprehensive coverage of the field of statistical physics. I am sure this book will become the reference for the next generation of researchers, students and practitioners in statistical physics. I wish I had this book when I was a student but I will have the privilege to rely on it for my teaching."
Alessandro Vespignani, Center for Biocomplexity, Indiana University

"Kardar, who has taught a statistical physics of fields course at MIT for the last 20 years, has finally put the content of his lectures into a single textbook. Designed for advanced students of physics, this book expands upon the notion of fractals, and concentrates on the shape, symmetry and locality of these entities. The author uses his work in particle physics as a foundation to explore statistical fields, fluctuations, the scaling hypothesis, lattice systems, and directed paths in random media."

"Over the past two decades, I have admired Kardar's contributions to theoretical physics, and now I admire his contribution to teaching physics. The first volume, Statistical Physics of Particles, is distinguished by its useful feature of teaching physics by example... the first eight chapters of Statistical Physics of Fields are stunning. With that volume Kardar has produced an excellent and unique textbook that will serve our community well for many years."
David Chandler, Physics Today

fantastic advanced stat. mech text, fills a need
By chicken head cut off
Ive always felt that a post-pathria/huang/etc. stat mech book was needed to do a good job on landau theory and perturbation theory for phase transitions...whatever one might call 'statistical field theory.' I found Kardar's lectures (turned into this book) to be exquisitely clear, and everything i'd ever hoped for in the realm of phase transition pedagogy. He has included material beyond the standard m^4 magnetic transition, like the nonlinear sigma model, BKT transition, and random walks. I cannot endorse this book highly enough, and expect it'll become sort of the 'jackson' of stat mech 2.

The best book on field theory!
By Feodor Hilitski
Ok, this book will make you work for everything, no free stuff here. Chapters give you only basic information, and you have to work out exercises in the end of the chapter to get the details.

Too much hyped
By J. R. G. Mendonca
The book is certainly a good book to learn statistical field theory from, but the starry reviews by L. Balents, D. Chandler, E. Stanley, and other NSF fellow travelers are way, way too hyped. No, this book does not compare to Landau's books in any form (or contents, for that matters), and no, you will not be led from the student stage to the expert stage by reading this book alone. The book is just another good graduate level textbook; actually, part of the material can be grasped by a motivated senior undergraduate student interested in stat. mech. (and this is a merit of the good pedagogy included in the presentation of the material).

If you want to delve into statistical field theory, I recommend Quantum Field Theory, by K. Huang (at an introductory level similar to that of this book), Statistical Field Theory, by G. Mussardo (at an intermediate level, dealing with complementary subjects), and the monograph Statistical Field Theory by G. Parisi (more advanced, a little bit dated).

The History of the Supreme Court of the United States, Vol. 12: The Birth of the Modern Constitution: The United States Supreme Court, 1941

1941-1953 marked the emergence of legal liberalism, in the divergent activist efforts of Hugo Black, William O. Douglas, Frank Murphy, and Wiley Rutledge. The war and early Cold War years of the Court in reality marked the birth of the constitutional order that dominated American public law in the later twentieth century. That legal outlook emphasized judicial concern for civil rights, civil liberties, and reaction to the emergent national security state. This book recounts the history of United States Supreme Court in the momentous yet usually overlooked years between the constitutional revolution that occurred in the 1930s and Warren-Court judicial activism in the 1950s.

Review
"This well-researched volume skillfully chronicles the work of the Supreme Court under Chief Justices Stone and Vinson. Although scholars have tended to give short shrift to this era, Wiecek makes a compelling argument that these years marked a watershed in constitutional history and pointed the court toward a new constitutional understanding. Wiecekas book will undoubtedly generate debate and will likely become the definitive treatment of the Stone-Vinson era."
- James W. Ely, Jr., Vanderbilt University Law School

"A brilliantly done book by a master in the field. Wiecek guides us through an era that is troubled and often confusing, and he does it with a sure hand for what is important. This is a welcome and a noteworthy contribution to the Holmes Devise."
- Melvin I. Urofsky, author of A March of Liberty: A Constitutional History of the United States and The Continuity of Change: The Supreme Court and Individual Liberties, 1953-1986

"William Wiecek blends research in the papers of the justices with the best insights of political, intellectual, and social history, and adds his own mature judgments to produce this superb, comprehensive, and accessible account of an often neglected period of constitutional history, demonstrating that the Supreme Court from 1941 to 1953 laid the foundations for nearly all of today's constitutional law."
- Mark Tushnet, Georgetown University Law Center

"Wiecek, Congdon Professor of Law and Professor of History at Syracuse Unviersity, has written an encyclopedic study of the stone and Vinson Courts that is detailed and intellectually first-rate...it is a volume worthy of our attention and continued consultation."
- The Green Bag Richard A. Paschal

"The cases that Wiecek chooses to write about he covers well and illuminatingly."
- Law and History Review

Introduction to the Senses: From Biology to Computer Science, by Terry R. J. Bossomaier

An understanding of the senses - vision, hearing, touch, chemical and other non-human senses - is important not only for many fields of biology but also in applied areas such as human computer interaction, robotics and computer games. Using information theory as a unifying framework, this is a wide-ranging survey of sensory systems, covering all known senses. The book draws on three unifying principles to examine senses: the Nyquist sampling theorem; Shannon's information theory; and the creation of different streams of information to subserve different tasks. This framework is used to discuss the fascinating role of sensory adaptation in the context of environment and lifestyle. Providing a fundamental grounding in sensory perception, the book then demonstrates how this knowledge can be applied to the design of human-computer interfaces and virtual environments. It is an ideal resource for both graduate and undergraduate students of biology, engineering (robotics) and computer science.

Review
"The book concludes with 28 pages of useful and excellent references for those who want additional information. Overall, the book is certainly interesting to read and will be useful for researchers using sensing technology in areas such as human-computer interaction or robotics."
Ramaswamy Palaniappan, Computing Reviews

"Reading this book gave me several hours of intellectual pleasure. Discovering the nuances of the senses is extremely exciting, and the author presents the concepts in a didactic manner that, most of the time, makes them appear natural to the reader. The distance between the fields of biology and engineering and computer science is generally regarded as great. However, after reading this book, it seems like the distance is quickly shrinking and the line that separates the fields is narrowing."
Agusti Solanas, Computing Reviews

"Both the breadth and depth of Introduction to the Senses are impressive... More than anything, it serves to inspire. A go-to resource for pertinent ideas, this is indeed a reference book worth keeping on the shelf."
Jean Huang, The Yale Journal of Biology and Medicine

About the Author
Terry R. J. Bossomaier is Professor in Computer Systems and Director of the Centre for Research in Complex Systems (CRiCS) at Charles Sturt University, Bathurst, Australia. He is particularly interested in sensory information in the context of vision and hearing and was involved in the creation of the first degree course in computer games in Australia in 2000.
