The authors argue that the CFBD plan meets three desirable features of a good pension system: 1) providing social insurance and relating contributions to benefits, ii) increasing the incentives to work, and iii) reducing inequities across demographic groups. This plan is clearly worth very serious consideration, but would have to be very carefully designed to avoid the moral hazard problems (associated with offering guaranteed returns in exchange for risky ones) that have blighted the US Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation. About the Author
Franco Modigliani, Institute Professor Emeritus and Senior Lecturer in Economics, Finance, and Accounting at MIT, received the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Science in 1985 for his pioneering work in analyzing the functioning of financial markets and the behavior of household savers. Much of his writing since that time has been devoted to issues relating to social security, capital markets, money supply, the Euro, and unemployment. He is the author, editor or coeditor of numerous books, including The Debate over Stabilization Policy (Cambridge, 1986) and the autobiographical Adventures of an Economist. Professor Modigliani's professional papers were collected in five volumes and published between 1980 and 1989.

Arun Muralidhar is Managing Director of FX Concepts, Inc. a private financial analysis firm. Prior to holding that position Dr Muralidhar served as Head of Research in the Investment Department and a member of the Investment Committee of the World Bank in Washington, DC and subsequently served as Managing Director and Head of Currency Research at J. P. Morgan Investment Management. He is the author of Innovations in Pension Fund Management (2003) and articles in leading journals in finance, including the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Financial Analysts Journal, the Journal of Risk, Derivatives Quarterly, and the Journal of Asset Management. He received his PhD in 1992 from MIT where he studied under Professor Modigliani.

About the Author
Jim Sharman is an international director of film, musicals, and theater. His credits include the stage production of The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which he later directed for 20th Century Fox, and the musicals Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. His stage work has encompassed more than 70 productions, including the operas Death in Venice, Don Giovanni, and Voss, and the classics Brecht, Shakespeare, Strindberg, and Wedekind.

Extending his talent for gauging the responses of theatre, opera and film audiences, he provides here a book which will keep you spellbound. If it lacks anything, it is perhaps short on explaining methods and means used in the production of such international successes as "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar". Oh, yes, there is something else missing - an index. There is no lack, however, of insights into his personal life. His highs and lows, his loves and losses - all are put before us. He also has a tale to tell of a relationship that is more improbable and astounding than anything I have ever found in the world of cinema, theatre or opera.

Richard Warren is Research Professor and Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Interesting and highly accessible collection of papers that reflects the wealth of new information since the 1990s

The CAMBRIDGE COMPANION TO SIBELIUS is a 2004 collection of fifteen papers by some of the most prominent Sibelius scholars from the English-speaking world and Finland. Unlike some entries in this series, this book's appeal goes beyond academics and will be great fun for ordinary Sibelius fans too, provided they have some training in music theory. The editor Daniel M. Grimley has divided the contributions into four parts: "Forging a voice: perspectives on Sibelius's biography", "Musical works", "Influence and reception" and "Interpreting Sibelius". Not everything in this collection interested me, so I'll limit my comments to the chapters I paid especial attention to.

Arnold Whittall's "The later symphonies" examines the musical drama and stylistic progressions (and retentions) from the Third on. Whittall takes the opportunity to respond to James Hepokoski's Cambridge Music Handbook analysis of the Fourth and Fifth.

Jukka Tiilikainen's "The genesis of the Violin Concerto" gives not only the external facts of this great piece's commision and premiere, but also takes the reader through Sibelius's writing process, looking at the manuscripts. The author was able to take the first version of the concerto (recorded only once on a BIS disc) into account and describe how Sibelius revised the piece to produce the version we normally know.

Julian Anderson's "Sibelius and contemporary music" notes that Central European interest in Sibelius was awoken by composers who came of age in the post-serialist era and he describes some of the features of Sibelius's music that fit with what the new schools were doing. He gives examples from France, the Nordic countries, and Britain and the USA. I had no idea that Murail and Dufourt drew such direct inspiration (even quotation) from the Finnish master. The Nordic composers highlighted are Per Norgard and Magnus Lindberg. The British and American composers are Peter Maxwell Davies, Oliver Knussen, George Benjamin and Morton Feldman.

Bethany Lowe's "Different kinds of fidelity" is a brief (7-page) description of some Sibelius recordings, highlighting different interpretative approaches.

The last chapter consists of two separate interviews that Daniel M. Grimley carried out with Sir Colin Davis and Osmo Vänskä respectively. These are very interesting for elucidating the approaches found in these two conductor's Sibelius cycles (on Decca and BIS respectively). Davis claims, for example, that there are 105 different tempos in "Tapiola", while Vänskä claims that the conductor must distinguish a mere three.

Grade 5-8-- Chang introduces many familiar names, such as Harriet Tubman, Belle Boyd, and Clara Barton, as well as women who rolled bandages at home, nursed injured soldiers near the front, or fought disguised as men. Through her use of primary-source materials such as letters and diaries, the author personalizes this history without whitewashing it. She also captures the prejudice faced by those women with nerve enough to assist in the war effort in a more public way, especially their poor treatment by men. In one of the most vivid passages, she describes Sojourner Truth facing down an audience of hostile men and bringing them to their feet cheering. The black-and-white archival photographs and reproductions are excellent, some showing how women continued to be portrayed as ``delicate and demure'' even though their work required determination and energy. In the ``Young Readers' History of the Civil War'' series, a survey of women's many roles, vividly illuminated with dozens of personal stories of both the famous and the obscure. Beginning with abolitionist Angelina Grimk‚, who was born a wealthy South Carolinian but moved to Philadelphia because she abhorred slavery, Chang introduces several other prewar ``Voices for Freedom,'' both black and white, from North and South. Succeeding chapters discuss ``Supplying the Armies'' (not just with sewing skills but with organizational genius); doctors and nurses who had to endure male doctors' prejudices in addition to the appalling hospital conditions; clever and courageous spies and the many women, some never revealed, who posed as men to serve as soldiers; trials and sorrows on the home front, including taking on men's roles and coping with shortages (there were bread riots all over the South); and, finally, the aftermath, when Angelina Grimk‚ reappears to discover that she has half-black nephews, put them through college and graduate school, and declare that ``these young men...far exceed in talents any of my other Grimk‚ nephews.'' Archival photos and engravings, maps, broadsides, cartoons, and boxed treatment of special topics are all skillfully chosen to support the fascinating, well-organized text. REAL GIRL POWER!

I bought this book while working on a Women's History project for college and also to help with Civil War living history presentations. Because this book is for young readers I have not used if for much more than an overview and to point out photographs (which are wonderful) during my presentations. However, I recommend this book for any young reader interested in history or teacher wishing to include more women into the curriculum. It gives a great overview of women's roles during the Civil War, how their lives changes, what roles they took on, and what struggles they endured! Now that is GIRL POWER!

Fiction format will grab the most apprehensive reader

The text looks at the famous and not so famous women who participated in the Civil War. It is written in a narrative format, more like a fictional text than a non-fiction. The book is filled with original pictures and short informational biographies of the most important women featured. The illustrations are very large and would be nice to use with an opaque projector when speaking about some of the women or events covered in the book. I also think it would be an excellent book for independent reading due to the format.

The Civil War from the Woman's Prospective -- With Some Remarkable Photos

With the cover photo of the armed woman who looked as if she had fought in the Civil War, I thought that this book was about women who had served in the War Between the States. However, most of the book was about the woman abolitionists before the war and traditional ways women helped the war effort on both sides. One chapter covered woman spies and the few known examples of woman soldiers.

This book for young readers did spend time explaining just how hard the war was for the women left behind and how they struggled to continue their lives during wartime. Some went to work in factories and others tilled the soil for food, as well as the many jobs women already did in the home.

Some of the photos, woodcuts and artist renderings were remarkable. Pay particular attention to the pair of photos of Frances Clalin, showing her in soldier's uniform and usual woman's dress.

Most of the book was of the usually-mentioned women of the era: Harriett Tubman, Clara Barton and Dorothea Dix. I think this would have been a much stronger book if more of the common women had been mentioned and discussed.

One of the best parts of this short book was the description of life for Southern women as Sherman marched through the South. It must have been harrowing to be fired upon (by Northern soldiers) and to lose what little the women and children had to eat. The book lightly brushed across the escaping ex-slaves and how the Northern soldiers didn't know what to do with them.

As a first book on the subject, this book is adequate. However, the research was of the typical subjects, with the exception of white Angelina Grimke. Her early life opened the book and the story of her ex-slave nephews drew the circle closed in a nice fashion.
