Lakota Hoop Dancer, by Suzanne Haldane, Jacqueline Delahunt, Kevin Locke

Repeated strikes on the drum-like a heartbeat-and an intense, chantlike song draw people near. In the still, stubborn heat of a summer's day, an American Indian man performs a breathtaking dance for an eager audience.

Kevin Locke, who is a member of the Lakota Nation, travels far from his home on the Standing Rock Reservation in South Dakota to perform this difficult and intricate dance for audiences around the world.

For Kevin, the hoop dance is more than a dance; it is a way of keeping Lakota traditions alive. And in the lively photographs and engaging text, the importance of the dance to both Lakota culture and all cultures-as a celebration of the human spirit and a symbol of unity and equality-is rendered compellingly. Readers will learn how Kevin prepares his hoops; what regalia, or outfit, he wears; the names and designs of specific hoop patterns and figures; and the importance of tiospaye, or extended family, to Lakota culture.

With its gorgeous photographs and fascinating narrative, this book is a testament to the enduring message of the American Indian hoop dance-hope for future prosperity and harmony.

From Booklist
Kevin Locke, a member of the Lakota nation who lives on the Standing Rock reservation in South Dakota, performs the hoop dance all over the world. He learned the intricate, demanding dance as a young man, and for him the dance is one way to keep Lakota traditions alive. Readers will learn where Locke lives, how he makes his costumes and his hoops, and why the hoop is an important symbol to many American Indians. The well-written narrative is nicely matched with large full-color photos showing Locke's costumes, various dance designs, homeland, and family. An attractive addition for school and public libraries. A glossary and reading list are appended. Karen Hutt

From Kirkus Reviews
Kevin Locke, a Lakota dancer, describes the hoop dance, including the regalia, construction of the hoops, and symbolism of the dance. Contemporary Lakota, accompanied by drummers and vocalists, have revived hoop dancing; dancers perform at powwows and cultural exhibitions, and teach hoop dancing to children to continue the cultural traditions. The authors make clear, as do the full-color photographs, that this art form is a blend of ancient and modern: Locke's costume includes moccasins beaded by hand in traditional designs, but with modern rubber soles so he doesn't slip on slick gymnasium floors; his hoops, traditionally made of willow branches, are now made of plastic tubing or rattan; the music may be provided by CD instead of drummers. Both the reverence and high spirits of the dance come through, but only the jacket shows the hoop dancer in motion. Still photos offer a sense of the pattern and difficulty of the movements, but perhaps only a videotape would be able to do the dance justice. Lakota Hoop Dancer not only explains about the dancing and dancer, but gives a feel for the land of the Lakota, their views of the world, and the people themselves and their values. The brief glossary and explanations of Lakota expressions within the book help. Students and others interested in American Indian tribes will enjoy this and gain insights. Excellent photographs enhance the text.

By Heather Lestoric
Lakota Hoop Dancer is an excellent nonfiction story that looks in depth at the dancer and dancing of the Lakota hoop dance. The story shows how something like a hoop dance can mean something so much more to the people who are a part of it – whether they are the performers or the audience.
The story goes on to describe how Kevin (our main character) learned the dance movements, and how he creates his hoops and his clothing for performances. The story shows how Kevin is helping this Native American tradition to be revived and grow.
The pictures are especially helpful aids for the story, showing the hoops and costumes that most of us are unfamiliar with. This is an excellent story for anyone interested in Native American tradition or for those of us interested in hoop dance.
