Well written, accurate, sad.

This book traces British Petroleum's venture into the Middle East, specifically Kuwait. A fascinating book, has everything from geological surveying to parties with Arab nationalists to the segregation of Arab employees from white employees. BP's early years in the Middle East was like a fat man's boot through a wet bed of flowers; by the end of the book you can sort of see why they hate us...

A great read. Highly reccommended.

About the Author
Michael Wyatt is an independent scholar. His work is engaged with the pre-modern cultural histories of Italy, England and France, particularly questions of translation as both a textual practice and a socio-political phenomenon. He is the author of The Italian Encounter with Tudor England: A Cultural Politics of Translation (2005) and co-edited (with Deanna Shemek) Writing Relations, American Scholars in Italian Archives: Essays for Franca Nardelli Petrucci and Armando Petrucci (2008). He is currently working on a second monograph, John Florio and the Circulation of Stranger Cultures in Early Stuart Britain, a critical edition of Florio's 1603 translation of Montaigne, The Essayes or Morall, Politike and Millitarie Discourses, and he is an associate editor of The Encyclopedia of Renaissance Philosophy.

I got the book quickly and really at a bargain price. The quality of the physical book is good. The book's content is very practical with many exercises to practice on. I must rely on the editor for the correctness of the results/typos so my rating is purely dependent on this bias. But at a first reading of the first few pages, the book is well designed and written.

Practical Head and Neck Ultrasound

The book was written for radiologists who wished to achieve a better understanding of basic anatomy and pathology using high resolution ultrasound techniques. However, as a head and neck surgeon now into the field of diagnostic ultrasound including US fine needle aspiration, this book was exactly what I was looking for. It is clear, well marked and written, and clearly written for a practicing clinician. It does not delve at all into the physics and makes a practical assumption that there is some skill level by the operator prior to reading this book. It is also very well organized with two different tracks. The first is dividing the discussion by functional areas, i.e. thyroid, lymphatics, etc. Next it is written by anatomical areas, i.e. Levels 1-6, larynx, carotid, parotid, etc. If you are interested in getting into this field, you will need a bit of practice with this technology prior to reading the book, but once you do, it is immensely helpful.

Good review book for practitioners doing ultrasound on the head and neck

I recommend this book for those doctors or techs who want a good overview of head and neck ultrasonography. Full of color photos. It has been very helpful for me in my practice of endocrinology and diagnostic thyroid ultrasounds and FNAs. There is a chapter on FNAs & biopsies. Very useful for those doctors who want to do the ultrasounds themselves instead of relying on an US tech. It was recommended to me by an experienced ultrasound tech.

This is a good book. It is a multiauthour book and there are some cracks between the chapters.

The authors are correct when they say that everyone starting out with head and neck ultrasound is confused as the anatomy is difficult. This aspect is well done in this book but some expansion and more images would be helpful. The text is a little dense and needs close reading.

The introduction of the levels in the neck and the various spaces in the neck probably should be placed earlier in the book and integrtaed better with the anatomy of the neck.

A few tables would be a useful addition: for example a table of normal vs suspicious features in lymph nodes or lesions within the thyroid. These would be useful summaries of the information within the text.

The section on the larynx was interesting. It did however have me scanning over my anatomy books to revise the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. A short section on the anatomy of the larynx before discussing the pathology would have been helpful.

Overall this is a good book. It is not the easiest first book on head and neck ultrasound ever written. There are a few minor things that would I feel help - including as ever more images. For those with some familarity with the head and neck I think this book would be very helpful. It is certainly a book that an ENT surgeon would find helpful if only to make his/her life easier dealing with radiology.

About the Author
Professor Mary Luckey is a Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at San Francisco State University. She earned her Ph.D. in biochemistry at U.C. Berkeley with the first identification of an iron transport protein in the bacterial outer membrane. Her postdoctoral work demonstrated the specificity of the E. coli maltoporin in proteoliposomes. While continuing research on maltoporin structure and function, she has taught biochemistry for twenty-five years, including the graduate-level membrane biochemistry course that provided the impetus for this book.

Membraneland and its building-blocks

Membranes are complex biological structures which are necessary to create specialized compartments within the cells of living organisms. They are made of phospholipids and they embed many different kinds of (membrane) proteins which provide energetic and chemical supply to the cell. As an example we can consider an ion channel which is a specialized protein that allows ions such as K+ to move across the membrane. There are many different kinds of membrane proteins, each characterized by its unique 3D structure and biological function. So far, about 700 membrane protein structures have been determined with the aid of biomolecular crystallography (see Rupp's book: "Biomolecular Crystallography: Principles, Practice, and Application to Structural Biology", 2009) and, more recently, by biomolecular NMR spectroscopy as well. Hence, it is not so simple to collect and organize the scientific results obtained by many research groups since 1985, when the first structure of a membrane protein was reported in the journal Nature by Deisenhofer and coworkers.
Luckey's book is a beautiful introduction to the field of membrane structural biology which should be praised for the way the material was selected and organized. The book contains a lot of colored figures, many of them being 3D cartoon-type representations of protein structures and atomic-level details of important residues that are necessary for the correct function of the protein. The role of each protein is clearly explained in the text and the physical and biochemical methods of characterization are also discussed. In addition, each of the 12 chapters contains a list of key references for those with the desire to dig further into the field. I highly recommend the book not only to the students but also, and especially, to those scientists that carry on interdisciplinary research on membrane proteins.

Long-overdue and very worthwhile

This is a long-awaited textbook for a field, membrane biochemistry, which has been slowly building momentum for the past 20 years. Advances in our understanding or membrane structure, and the ramifications of that structure for membrane function, have come at a rapid pace in recent years. So this book comes at a very good time for those of us who understand that membranes and lipids are as critical to life as DNA or protein. The book is comprehensive; all facets of membrane biochemistry are covered in some detail. The illustrations are stunning, and indeed might be the crowning touch for the entire book. Recent advances in the field are included, along with the older classical results upon which the field was founded. The sections on lipid diversity, lipid biochemistry, and membrane protein assemblies are particularly welcomed; sometimes these topics get slighted in general biochemistry textbooks. It would be nice if the author included a more comprehensive bibliography, but, given the burgeoning literature in this field, it is understandable why she did not. In summary, the author has done a remarkable job collecting information and synthesizing it into a readable, thorough, and most timely textbook. Prabhakar Gondhalekar is an Honorary Fellow in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University College, London. The author weaves a tight fabric from many yarns.

For me, a well-written science history contains three things. It establishes the context for the discoveries and developments. It accurately describes the relevant details of the experiments so that the results, interpretations and conclusions can be understood. Finally, it discusses the implications of the developments. The author accomplishes all three to my satisfaction in this book.
The story of gravity involves many subplots. Each part contributes a piece to the developing concept of gravity. The author skillfully weaves the pieces into a coherent story. Along the way he presents details that challenge common misconceptions about gravity, clarifies myths about the familiar personalities who have demystified aspects of gravity and introduces less familiar but influential contributors to our still-evolving understanding of gravity.
The book is comprehensive enough to satisfy my requirements for a well-written science history, but not so over-burdened with detail that it becomes cumbersome to follow the main plot. It reads like a suspense story for a reader who's interested in science history.

Gripping Gravity

Gravity is one of those fundamental forces that have engaged the brightest brains over centuries of scientific endeavor. The Grip of Gravity by Prabhakar Gondhalekar does a fine job of taking us through the history and development of scientific understanding about gravity, from Aristotle to the modern day, to clarify our present day ideas about what gravity actually is and how those ideas developed.

The book starts right at the origin of the quest to understand what gravity might be, over two thousand years ago, and then takes us through the experiments of Galileo and his thoughts on inertia. Then he describes how Newton reconciled gravity with the equivalence principle of inertia so he could produce his famous formulas that still enable the prediction of orbits of planets and how objects fall on the Earth.

Gondhalekar then takes us through the modern thinking of Einstein, with gravity being thought of as a distortion in the space-time continuum, to create gravitational wells that attract all mass to each other. It concludes with some of the latest thinking of the theory of gravity and how scientists are still trying to determine what might be the fundamental cause of gravity. Perhaps the answer will be the long awaited `Theory of Everything'.

I found Gondhalekar's book a fairly straightforward read until the introduction of string theory but I suspect I would start to struggle at that point no matter how good the writer. Gravity is a fundamental force of nature that we are still trying to understand but along the way Gondhalekar explores how gravity relates to the speed of light, the Hubble constant, dark matter and black holes.

About the Author

Excellent place to begin

The latest book by Dr. Terry Price can serve as an introduction to students of the issues surrounding leadership ethics, or more specifically concerning the possible justifications leaders might claim for breaking the moral rules that are otherwise binding on the rest of us.

In the course of developing his argument for a Kantian view, Professor Price presents a variety of classic ethical theories, treating them respectfully before showing their limitations when it comes to breaking ordinary moral rules. And he does this in accessible prose, step-by-step.

At the 2008 International Leadership Association conference in Los Angeles, the author will be explaining his purpose and reviewing his argument. In my opinion, this book could serve as a textbook for undergraduates or graduates new to the issues.

My other thoughts will be reserved until I publish a more intricate book review, but I can say that it will be positive.
