About the Author
Zhu Han is currently an Assistant Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Boise State University, Idaho. In 2003, he was awarded his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Maryland, College Park. Zhu Han has also worked for a period in industry, as an R & D Engineer for JDSD. Dr Han is PHY/MAC Symposium vice chair of IEEE Wireless Communications and Networking Conference, 2008.

K. J. Ray Liu is Professor and Associate Chair for Graduate Studies and Research of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the University of Maryland, College Park. Dr Liu is the recipient of numerous honors and awards, including best paper awards from IEEE Signal Processing Society (twice), IEEE Vehicular Technology Society, and EURASIP, as well as recognition from University of Maryland, including the university-level Distinguished Scholar-Teacher Award, Invention of the Year Award, and college-level Poole and Kent Company Senior Faculty Teaching Award.

Good overview

The book provides a good overview of resource allocation problems in wireless networks. The first part of the book introduces wireless systems and corresponding terminologies. Then it discusses power, rate control and multi access mechanisms. These are effectively the 'control knobs' when optimizing resources. The authors then provide the basics of optimization, covering both linear and non linear optimization. They also touch upon ILPs and game theory. The last part gives specific resource allocation examples.

The book is readable and provide a good high level introduction to the subject matter. However, the English in some chapters needs to be improved. The book is suitable for graduate students. This book is not much use for self-learning. More appropriate as a reference book.

About the Author
Originally trained as a theoretical physicist, Peter Schattner is currently a computational biologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). His principal research interests are in the genome-wide identification and characterization of non-protein-coding RNA genes and cis-regulatory mRNA motifs. Dr. Schattner has taught bioinformatics courses at the University of California and California State University and has worked in the research and development of medical ultrasound and magnetic resonance instrumentation at SRI (Stanford Research Institute) and Diasonics, Inc. He has been a Woodrow Wilson Fellow and was leader of the team that received the 1990 Matzuk Award for technical innovation from the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.

Here is an authoritative book that will get you on the air, not only with the reference data, but also with the means to compare it with your own data.

Excellent buy for non-biologists looking to understand some of the approaches in biological modeling.

First off, this review might be biased. I know the author (GF), took his class, this was the recommended text, and it was a very very fun class.

My background is in mechanical engineering with lots of computational physics/modeling thrown in. I was beginning to get interested in learning how biological models are constructed and in getting a top-down perspective of the state of art now. That was my approach while tackling this text.

The book assumes the reader's familiarity with elementary concepts related to statistical physics, mechanics, geometrical intuition and familiarity with differential equations. The level of background assumed would be on par with what most sophomore physics or senior-level engineering students would possess. Unfamiliar concepts do not generally require more background than what Wikipedia can provide.

The text is fairly lucid; you might catch a grammatical or spelling error sometimes but you probably won't get caught up on that; most errors are not semantic in nature and rereading the phrases usually makes the intention of the author clear.

The figures are fabulous, and extremely helpful. There is probably no section that you won't be able to understand if you take the time to look up the references (some are quite easy to obtain online if you belong to an academic institution).

This book is truly written by physicists for the physicists/engineers and does not at any moment assume that you know more biology than about the human reproductive processes.

On the flip side, this book DOES NOT, and neither at any point intend to, cover the whole spectrum of biology and its physical modeling. It chooses to focus on the developing embryo and physical models of the developmental processes alone!

The above point is important because I was not interested in 'modeling cellular developmental processes'. I just wanted a quick primer, an introduction to learn sufficient biology to start reading papers written by biologists for the biologists. However if one finishes reading this text, they can possibly learn more than they might from opening a standard biology undergrad level text (At least, I did).

I do not possess enough information about other similar texts, so I cannot really compare this book with other books of a similar scope.

(If you belong to GF's institution and are not sure about the course and the course load it imposes, buy the book and take the class. GF is one of the nicest people whose class to be in and the course work is extremely flexible.)

Interdisciplinary concepts mediated between biology and physics

The book by Forgacs and Newman on one hand introduces important biological concepts for physicists with interest in development, covering properties of isolated cells and principles of their regulation, the interaction between cells and cell and their environment, the formation of tissues by morphogenesis, principles underlying organogenesis, and evolutionary aspects important in development.

On the other hand the book also presents the complex interplay of physical processes under genetic control during development. It introduces fundamental physical concepts from point and continuum mechanics, thermodynamics and statistical mechanics (including critical phenomena), dynamical systems theory and reaction-diffusion systems. A major strength of the book is that physics is introduced through fundamental biological processes, thus using a framework familiar to biologists (and not the other way around, as in most texts on biophysics). The selection of examples captures many stages and processes during development.

The model description does not stop at the level of purely qualitative text description but includes the basic equations and their analysis, although this is done at an elementary level, requiring minimal knowledge of calculus (and the more complicated concepts are discussed in special "Boxes"). In this way the book also contains a short course in mathematical model formulation written for biologists. It does not aim at replacing existing books on developmental biology or biophysics but fits into the gap between both. It builds an interface between physicists and biologists in embryonic development and thereby should facilitate the reading of the more specialized books on developmental biology by physicists as well as the better understanding of physical principles and mathematical models and the role these play in biological systems, by biologists.

Unique Perspective on the Relationship Between Physics and Biological Development

While the course of embryological development is extremely complex, many of the component processes that go into shaping an embryo are strongly reminiscent of simpler physical phenomena which occur in nonliving materials. Some of these analogies are exact, the same physics applies in both cases. However, often the analogy is inexact or even misleading. Thus, while physical analogies can be extremely useful in understanding development, they also need to be approached with caution. Until now, no book-length overview has reviewed the many successes and pitfalls of a biological-physics approach to development and the material available in technical articles has been dispersed and often written in a technical jargon inaccessible to its target audience. Biological Physics of the Developing Embryo, fills this niche in a style that is easily comprehensible by advanced undergraduate biologists and physicists (and assumes minimal background on either side), while containing enough material that even senior researchers in development will learn a great deal. I've been working in the area for 15 years and found many ideas and references that were both new and valuable. The biological illustrations and examples are well chosen and cover almost every aspect of development in a clear, logical sequence. The consistent philosophy and approach of the two writers, one a physicist and bioengineer and the other a developmental biologist, helps organize an apparently heterogeneous collection of models and developmental mechanisms into a coherent story.

Because of its novelty and breadth, the book contains a number of minor errors, which will doubtless be corrected in a future edition. Overall, this is a path-breaking book, which I am recommending to all of my own students and to any colleagues interested in the question "What does physics have to say about development?"

About the Author
P. A. Ramachandran is a Professor in the Department of Energy, Environment and Chemical Engineering at Washington University, St Louis. He has extensive teaching experience, mainly in transport phenomena, mathematical methods and chemical reaction engineering, and he has also held many visiting appointments at various international institutions. He has written or co-written two previous books, as well as over 200 journal articles in which he has pioneered many new concepts and computational tools for modelling of chemical reactors. He is the recipient of the Moulton Medal from the Institution of Chemical Engineers, UK, the NASA certificate of recognition, USA, and the NEERI award from the Institution of Chemical Engineers, India.

CSEC Revision for Physics, is an update, to the previous "CXC Revision for Physics" by Peter Whiteley, which I used in 2001 as a student at St. Mary's College, Trinidad.
I personally felt Peter's book, was very well written, and he crystallized the most salient aspects of the then, CXC physics syllabus, in a clear and calculating manner.
Particular strenghts included a compartmentalization into roughly thirty chapters that were reinforced with past examination questions accompanied by numerical solutions, and his lucid diagrams and insights.
During the lead-up to the June 2001 Examinations, to myself and several other peers, this book was indispensable.

About the Author
Monica Wellington was born in London and lived in Europe until she moved tothe United States at age seven. As a child she always loved to draw andpaint, but it wasn't until she went to college that she realized she wantedto be an artist for her profession. She went to the University of Michigan'sSchool of Art to earn her BFA and studied pottery, painting and printmaking.After art school, while traveling and living in a number of differentcountries, she had various art related jobs, which were all good backgroundand preparation for doing children's books.She has both written and illustrated the majority of her books. She says,"I usually start a book visually, with an idea of what I want to paintpictures about. The pictures may come first before the words for me. Boththe pictures and words go through many revisions, and I am often stillworking on the final words after I finish the pictures."She says that doing children?s books is great. "I get to have a job where Ispend my days doing totally what I love to do. And it is very gratifyingthat my work goes out into the world and is shared with other people. Ifeel incrediably lucky for all this!"Since 1994 she has taught illustration at the School of Visual Arts. Shelives in New York City with her daughter Lydia.

Great Toddler Read!

A favorite book for my 2.5 year old. The pictures are all vibrant with a special touch that really is fitting for the age group it is targeted to. All of Monica Wellington's books have these illustrations. The book focuses on life at the firehouse and responding to a call. It does a good job representing other races.

Firefighter Frank....

What a cute book. The little one "loves" her firemen. Whenever we are out and she see's them she always goes up to them and thanks them tells them she loves them. So I had to get her a Fireman book and she just loves to read this book over and over. Great book.

Love it!

My son is almost 2 and LOVES this book. He is really into firetrucks and any kind of vehicle, and this is his new favorite. We have to read this every day. It's a quick little book, great for his little hands, and an easy read for when he gets older and is learning how to read.
