Daniel S. Mills is principal lecturer in behavioural studies and animal welfare and director of the animal behaviour referral clinic at the University of Lincoln. Sue M. McDonnell is an associate professor and founding head of the Havemeyer Equine Behavior Programme at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine, New Bolton Center. Recent research results on behaviour of the domestic horse

This is a very interesting book giving an overview on recent research results of horse behaviour. The text also gives a lot of relevant references. In addition to many other books on equine behaviour, this one addresses the impact of the domestic environment on horse behaviour with special emphasis on riding and training. I would very much recommend that book for everybody interested in horses, however, a certain knowledge on behaviour is necessary for understanding.

Her only obstacle is convincing the queen and her nanny, who thinks that "gardening is not princesslike." As soon as they agree, Melchior and the princess get to work. Finally, Chamomile announces that the creation "isn't just my sort of garden. It's everyone's sort of garden-." A good choice to read alone or aloud, this well-paced story illustrated with detailed pastel watercolors, including a drawing of Chamomile's plan and final three-page foldout, will have readers thinking that Chamomile's garden is their sort of garden, too.

The Princess Grows a Garden

Princess Chamomile may be a princess but she doesn't mind getting dirty! Princess Chamomile and Milchoir (the gardener) plant a garden designed by the Princess. It takes a long time to create the garden - but it is worth the wait. This book is great for readers from 7 years and up and is a great book for all people interested in gardens and princesses! My favorite part of the story is when Princess Chamomile admits that she didn't play the piano well because she was day-dreaming. Knowing that someone else feels that way may let kids understand that a little whimsey instead of perfection is perfectly okay. It is also a good story to teach patience - and that good things take a while to come true. The illustrations are perky and fit the charm of the story. This is a delightful book and a good way to get students back into the swing of reading for this school year.

About the Author
Timothy Frye is the Marshall D. Shulman Professor of Post-Soviet Foreign Policy and the Director of the Harriman Institute at Columbia University. He previously taught at Ohio State University and has worked as a consultant for the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, the US Agency for International Development, and the Bloomberg Foundation. About the Author
Bipin R. Desai is a Professor of Physics at University of California, Riverside where he does research in elementary particle theory. He obtained his Ph.D. in Physics from University of California, Berkeley. He was a visiting Fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge University, UK, and has held research positions at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, and CEN, Saclay, France. He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society.

My two cents

I used this textbook for a series of 3 graduate classes in Quantum Mechanics, in which we basically cover the first 26 chapters.

I think the textbook is easy to follow, one can learn with it the mathematical tools of QM. The one thing I don't like about the book is that is not a reliable reference book (in the sense that unless I went through the whole derivation of the equations I can't be sure that the equation is not missing an h bar, c or a minus), however you must consider that this is the first edition of the book.

Extremely Detailed Mathematics, Everything Derived for You

As a student of Dr. Desai's, I've had first-hand experience with working through this textbook, in the context of the author's own lectures. This book is extremely good for working through derivations of various quantum mechanics concepts, and mathematically, is quite rigorous. I think this book would be most useful for the graduate student theorist, who is perhaps not as interested in experimental application of quantum mechanics as an experimentalist.

The end of chapter problems are at times esoteric and mathematical, applying linear algebra to deconstruct an operator with no quantum mechanical context, however, often, the mathematics from these problems appear far ahead in the text. I would recommend the student also use another textbook to gain a more 'experimentalist' perspective on quantum mechanics.

This book contains some errors (it is only in its first edition). At times the errors are minor, but other times they can be more significant. The most common error seems to be false equation references, or a missing 'h-bar' and factors of 'c'. Very occasionally (I have seen one or two within the first 300 pages) there is a serious error, such as using an angular momentum vector instead of a magnetic field vector.

I think this book is an excellent resource, and is almost completely self contained. It will teach you the tools and mathematical back-bone of quantum mechanics, but leaves rigorous applications of the subject to the student's imagination.

Pleasant level of rigor, but fails to explain motivations.

B. Desai's book on Quantum Mechanics is well-written, but the book lacks structure. Rather than introducing the necessity for a topic, and its physical motivations, the book leaps into derivations of various phenomena, without giving any attention to why the steps in the proof are being taken. Consequently, I think this book is not particularly well-suited to self-teaching; it simply doesn't stand on its own. That being said, it makes an excellent supplement to another work. Whenever derivations or explanations have confused me in other books, Desai usually has a section dedicated to the topic at hand. If buying, I would recommend doing so in conjunction with R. Shankar's Quantum Mechanics. My other minor problem with the text is that it's very dry. Because there are so few explanations as to the motivation for the mathematics, the unending proofs quickly become tiresome.

Math Puzzles from another Universe!

I found the puzzles and problems in this book to be original and varied, and with a wide range of difficulty levels. I enjoyed the fact that some puzzles might actually have more than one answer, which leaves room for healthy debate and for better understanding the way different people think. I think this book can be enjoyed by readers of different levels of mathematical sophistication. For example, a freshman in high school could skip the more difficult problems, like the one on Ramanujan Congruences, although this is one of the most interesting chapters. My favorite chapter is one that poses a statistics-like question, dealing with bones thrown into a pit. You have to figure out the ratio of the long piece to the short piece. Here's a sample of other chapters that I really enjoyed:

What is interesting and what solvable?

I prefer mathematical puzzles that have two features:
- they are interesting (i.e. they have that difficulty that make them worth trying to solve);
- they are solvable without developing a whole new theory and without writing program code.
In this book most problems that are interesting (very interesting and intriguing, I must admit) are not solvable in the foresaid sense, and most solvable ones are not interestin. Of course, a few are both. The picture sequences to be completed are very original, and sometimes difficult, examples of QI tests.
However, in spite of that slight flaw, I have really enjoyed reading it. It may depends on my appreciation of Oz novels and movie, and even if this book is not likely to mark the history of mathematical entertainment, it remains a worthy reading.

A true mathematical wonderland

This wonderful mathematical puzzle book has over 100 puzzles sure to delight readers -- from kids to adults. The problems include: mazes, sequences, probability, and more. Most puzzles are very clever and fun. I liked considering the yellow-brick road that crosses America. How many bricks would it take? I also liked the zebra numbers and circular primes. Legion's number is a number so big that it makes a a billion look puny.
Anyone who has pondered the vastness of our mathematical universe will love this book.

not always easy to use, but thorough and comprehensive

This book is heavy in more ways than one. From the decidedly mixed bag of reactions to it from other reviewers, I have to believe that how people feel about it is greatly determined by what kind of linguistic background they have and what exposure to Arabic (if any) they had before taking this on. For some, there is no question that it would be a quantum leap both in terms of the highly technical coverage of Arabic grammar, and in the demands it makes on learners, especially with the huge amount of vocabulary to be memorized that comes with each lesson.

Having come to this work from other Arabic textbooks with which I was considerably less than satisfied ) the extremely rigorous treatment of the grammar makes it very valuable to have, as it clears up a number of points that have not been made clear in other books. Consider, for instance, the question of whether the pattern of stress is altered if case endings are pronounced (the answer to that is yes, by the way). The size of the vocabulary lists is less daunting if you already know some.

So although this is probably too dry and academic to work out well as a classroom text, and I certainly wouldn't suggest it be the first book for a beginning learner, it does have a great deal to offer serious learners as a backup and reference. And it is definitely worth the effort to master the linguistic terminology that is needed to understand the grammatical explanations.

This is more for the Intermediate student

I want to update my interview. If you are an Arab-American with some background in Arabic, you may like this book if you want to review. If you already study a lot of Arabic and understand linguistic terms and can think in high level English, which I am trained to do in graduate school, then this would be great. Usually, very motivated learners learn languages. You must be motivated and somewhat experienced to benefit from this book. I think if you can find a tutor to help you with this book, there are many advantages to using it. However, you would have to go slowly. It could be a bit dry. I like the fact that it explains Arabic grammar using Arabic terms. I learned Arabic at the American School of Kuwait and was compelled to take it, and I was, basically, fluent, but, for some reason, I didn't understand my instructor's explanations. It's easier for me to make sense of the terms that were used in the past and learn from this book than from my teachers. I can relate more to this book than my instructors.

If you want something for learning Arabic and self-study go with:

1)Nicholas Awde and Alif Baa for mastering the alphabet

2)Don't go to Al-Kitab, it's too much of a jump. Go and use Mastering Arabic by Whightwick. There are two volumes now. If you have a tutor, use Alosh's "Ahlan Wa Sahlan" book.

If you want things geared to dialects, then go with Munther Younis for Levantine and Al Kitab for Egyptian and a mix of classical. Alosh sticks to just classical, but in a pratical way.

A serious book for learning Arabic

First of all, this book is not for learners who just want to learn enough Arabic to get by on the streets of Cairo, it is a very serious and compact textbook for people who want to acquire a sound grounding in MSA (especially for acquiring practicla knowledge in reading journalistic and expository Arabic) and those who work with a teacher. It is more compact than the Alif Baa and contains much more info than Teach Yourself Arabic for a reasonable price.

Some reviewers complained about the extensive use of linguistic jargons in this book, but if one could not even overcome the difficulties with grammatical terminolgies in English, how can he learn Arabic, a notoriously hard language, well? In fact, once one understand what those terminologies mean, it makes the explanations crystal clear.

However, I do have a complaint: the texts are completely unvocalized, even the glossaries in each lesson and appendices are not fully vocalized, and the recording of the book cannot make up for it, since it reads the text only.

Suggestions for people who intend to use this book for self-study:

1: You cannot soly rely on this book alone, you need a few more books with more recordings, conversational books and easier books.

2: You should do the excercises SELECTIVELY, otherwise it is more than likely they are going to overwhelm you.

3: You should not expect to absorb 100% of information in each lesson, but requently go back to previous lessons to review, since each lesson contains so much information that adamantly try to learn everything and learn every word appeared is just not practical.

With some endeavours with this book, you will be amazed how much Arabic you have learned from it.

Good suppliment

Nice book and it can be very valuable, but when instructing with collocations I tend to select examples that arise during a given course, rather than making a course out of it. Using Collind Coubuild online (or any other online site) can do more than this book - going online makes the process student-centered and more active.

I do however see this book as a useful reference to be used from time to time. I simply feel that collocations are better illustrated via online searching and discovery. One strength I guess is that the book goes beyond the word level and has students see patterns in language - and for this it gets a 4-5.

Metal contamination is one of the most ubiquitous, persistent and complex environmental issues, encompassing legacies of the past (e.g. abandoned mines) as well as impending, but poorly studied, threats (e.g. metallo-nanomaterials). Writing for graduate students, risk assessors and environmental managers, Drs Luoma and Rainbow explain why controversies exist in managing metal contamination and highlight opportunities for policy solutions stemming from the latest advances in the field. They illustrate how the 'lateral' approach offers opportunities in both science and management, making the case that the advanced state of the science now allows bridging of traditional boundaries in the field (e.g. between field observations and laboratory toxicology). The book has a uniquely international and interdisciplinary perspective, integrating geochemistry, biology, ecology, and toxicology, as well as policy and science. It explicitly shows how science ties into today's regulatory structure, identifying opportunities for more effective risk management in the future.

About the Author
Sam Luoma was a research scientist at the U.S. Geological Survey for 34 years, before moving to the University of California at Davis. He was the first Lead Scientist for California's redesign of water management, gaining valuable experience in linking science and policy. He was a W. J. Fulbright Distinguished Scholar in 2004 and was awarded the U.S. Presidential Rank Award for career accomplishments in 2005. Phil Rainbow is Keeper of Zoology at The Natural History Museum in London, managing both public communication of science and a staff of more than 100 working scientists in one of the premier scientific institutions in the world. He was awarded the annual Kenneth Mellanby Review Lecture Prize by the journal Environmental Pollution in 2002.
