A Must-read for Anyone Interested in Justice (and Injustice)

Not only political theorists but anyone who cares about the fate of American justice (and justice more broadly) should consult this provocative and important book. Scholars of liberalism, in particular, will benefit from its challenge to the notion that liberalism has somehow solved the political problem of punishment. It should unsettle assumptions and prompt a rethinking of the moral and theoretical premises of liberalism. Highly recommended.

Perceptive, Engaging, and On

Gliding with surety from Greek tragedy to legal theory to Oprah, Aladjem casts a keen eye on some terrifying impulses in American culture. Why do we want vengeance? Why do we want to see our enemies in pain? How can we save justice and democracy, and do we even want to? The Culture of Vengeance is academic writing that bursts from the Ivory Tower. It helps us reckon, unflinchingly, with a world in which we suffer and wound, punish and plead, rage and--at our best, and as Aladjem shows us--reason.

insightful; inspiring; thought-provoking

Justice, not Vengeance - this riveting book makes the thoughtful case that substituting vengeance for justice is a problem for democracy as such. Especially in the US, society exercizes vengeance instead of justice. From TV cop shows, malpractice lawsuits, issues of race and the death penalty, author Terry Aladjem argues we are substituting the cheap nickel of vengeance for the dollar of moral justice - and we all pay the price of that meanness. Tracing his argument in civil and legal discourse, and in literature, from the Greeks through South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Aladjem's argument is bold and convincing. Indeed, it evoked in me that fore-heading smiting, "why didn't I see that?!" reaction of things that are patently true.
A must-read for anyone interested in where our legal, civil, and social systems are heading.

In time for Darwin's 2009 bicentennial, the complete correspondence both to and from Charles Darwin during his five years circumnavigating the globe on the HMS Beagle, beginning in 1831, documents his growth as a naturalist and offers a picture of life in the England he left behind. With one exception, the letters were published in volume one of the projected 30-volume Correspondence of Charles Darwin. It's a pleasure to have the correspondence from this critical period in an accessible volume. It is fascinating to watch Darwin attempt to come to grips with the huge amount of data he collected and make sense of the patterns he observed. We get an intimate look at an adventurous young Darwin, so unlike his more familiar, sedentary older self who would write On the Origin of Species. The late Burkhardt, who founded the Darwin Correspondence Project, has filled in details and context as needed, and the introduction by Darwin biographer Browne is a joy to read. Drawings made by Conrad Martens, the Beagle's official artist for part of the voyage, not seen by PW. (Nov.)
