About the Author
Karen J. Greenberg is the Executive Director of the Center on Law and Security. She is the editor of the NYU Review of Law and Security, co-editor of The Torture Papers: The Road to Abu Ghraib, and editor of the books Al Qaeda Now and The Torture Debate in America. She is a frequent writer and commentator on terrorism, international law, the war on terror, and detainee issues. Her work has been featured in the L.A. Times, the San Francisco Chronicle, the Nation, the American Prospect, and on major media outlets.

Joshua Dratel is a practising attorney in New York City. He is past President of the New York State Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Along with Major Dan Mori, Dratel assisted in the defense of Australian detainee David Hicks. He also defended al Qaeda member Wadih el Hage after the bombings in Tanzania and Kenya. Dratel has written articles on defending terrorism cases, including Ethical Issues in Defending a Terrorism Case: How Secrecy and Security Impair the Defense of a Terrorism Case and Ethical Issues in Defending a Terrorism Case: Stuck in the Middle. He is co-editor of The Torture Papers: The Road to Abu Ghraib. He received his B.A. from Columbia College and his law degree from Harvard Law School.

A dutiful Study

My copy comes courtesy of a descendant of the Latz mentioned frequently throughout the book. It certainly fills an important function in historical documentation of Albrecht's lengthy Lutheran mission work at Hermannsburg, west of Alice Springs. it should be read in conjunction with the general history of the place, and forms an interesting adjunct to Barry Hill's monumental biography of that other mission phenomenon, T.G.Strehlow('Broken Song'). It's not for the tourist, this book, and probably more for a local reader than a scholar. The most interesting thing for this reader was that the immense tragedy being enacted in central Australia today, the early deaths through alcohol and violence, the appalling health, the indolence, and so on, were all clearly reported on by the remarkably stoic and persistent, Albrecht.Albrecht doesn't come alive though. His motives are, by and large, reduced to serving his Lutheran god. Reams of living, tortured hardship are left for the reader to adduce. The Barry Hill book, courageously attepts to get to the man, Strehlow, and we are left the richer for his exploration into language at the root of this cultural interchange. Intertwined with the disease's history is the biography of Edward Jenner, the 18th-century English surgeon whose observation that milkmaids who had contracted cowpox were immune to smallpox led him to conduct experiments that resulted in the perfection of the smallpox vaccination. Jenner is portrayed as a dedicated doctor devoted to what he considered a sacred mission, that of completely annihilating the "Speckled Monster" and demonstrating that science could ultimately triumph over disease. His dream appeared to have come true when the World Health Organization declared in 1980 that smallpox had been eradicated from Earth, but the continued existence in the U.S. and Russia of some 600 vials of frozen variola, originally slated to be destroyed by December 31, 1993, is at the center of an ongoing controversy among scientists, governments, and the military. *Starred Review* Gr. 4-8. Marrin's latest offering is a fascinating, eminently readable social history of smallpox, with an emphasis on Dr. Edward Jenner's contributions to eradicate the disease. Beginning with a description of the role smallpox played in the decimation of the Aztec empire, Marrin makes clear that infectious disease began to take hold and spread once people started living in settled groups and that smallpox probably crossed over to humans from a farm animal host. He explains how the virus works within the body, describes several well-known outbreaks, and recounts how Jenner, an English country surgeon, using a combination of observation and experimentation, developed what we now call the smallpox vaccine. Marrin's writing is direct and succinct, and his scientific explanations are lucid and well detailed. Numerous black-and-white period illustrations (some appropriately gruesome) appear in most chapters, adding interest to the text. A final chapter on smallpox as a weapon of mass destruction makes this title particularly current. Appended with bibliographies of books and Internet sites, the book is a great choice for both science and history classes as well as a solid read for science buffs. A thrilling story told clearly with sophistication for a 4th-8th grader.

Before reading this book I might have written that I was informed about Dr. Jenner, smallpox and its history. After reading it I realize how ignorant I was. I saw the book in my grandson's school library and chose it to preview for bias and the interpretations that frequently replace knowledge in today's children's books.

The author, a retired history professor, has written a book that begins with a discussion of cells,bacterial and virual disease and ends with a convincing statement about the dangers facing us today as a result of the disappearance of small pox throughout the world.

In between is the most thrilling story about the efforts of an ordinary boy who became a man whose efforts positively altered the lives of hundreds of millions of people. His personal qualities were a curious mind; the ability to observe; his dedication to his work; his confidence; and perserverance.

The reader learns of the treatment of small pox prior to Jenner; of the various experiments leading to the development of the vaccination; of the objections by recognized leaders to Jenner's work and the ramifications of the eradication of smallpox.

This is a thrilling story for the young scientist, but the book is written so well that all children (and adults) will be enthralled.

Dr. Jenner is shown to be one of a handful of men who have altered the course of history and the lives of hundreds of millions of humans. The discussion of disease; medical techniques of the past; how one became a physician; historical differences between surgeons and physicians; the nature of opposition to ideas; the development of an idea; the personal characteristics that result in radical change; the importance of observation, thought and experimentation; the reality that the recognized establishment in an occupation is often ignorant and resistant to change are all presented in an engrossing and unsensational manner.

The social effects (Native American exposure to small pox) are presented in a straight forward manner allowing a thoughtful child to open his mind to the concept of historical consequences without imposing blame or guilt.

The discussion of medical experimentation; its evolution and ethical problems provide knowledge to a child that will be used later when a child reads and thinks further.

I so admire the authors use of language and ability to discuss complicated issues on a child's level with sophisticated insight that I am buying other of Dr. Marrin's books.

Excellent Book!

This was a remarkable book. The author was able to explain microbiology, immunology, the history of smallpox, and the development of a vaccine with wonderful clarity. I highly recommend this book for kids (and adults) in 4th grade and up!

This is an inspiring story about an inspiring and generous doctor who worked tirelessly for the good of ALL people. My daughter and I both love science, especially medically related and this book was a great read for that. We also enjoyed learning about the character of Dr. Jenner. Imagine how much faster medicine would have advanced if more doctors had his character. Even if your children are not interested in medicine, it's worth the read studying Dr. Jenner's character.

Besides having an excellent and clear description of how our current theories think stars are being born, this book has the most spectacular set of photographs I've seen collected in one book. The photographs are from virtually every major telescope on Earth and those that we have put into space. Further the photographs are in every frequently from radio waves to x-rays.

This book is aimed at the casual, non-technical reader. It is 'math free.' But it still manages to convey the tremendous magnitude, majesty, and mysteries of the universe we can see. Its main subject is the birth of stars, and mostly within our own galaxy, the Milky Way. With the birth of the stars, there is also the death of stars. The book was published in 2006. That was back when Pluto was still a planet -- and that's OK with me, I still think of it as a planet in spite of how the vote went. In its discussion about planets around other stars, it is pretty up to date, but of course new ones are being discovered all the time.

Clear Description, Magnificant Photographs

.Excellent book

I purchased this book used from and vendor and it arrived in excellent condition. I finally got around to reading it and was pleasantly surprised by the depth of information in a well written non technical form. It covers most topics fairly completely and even though it is a few years old, is still fairly up to date. The photographs are stunning and well chosen. I plan to donate it to a local middle school where astronomy is part of the 8th grade curriculum and the library is short of funds for books. This book should provide an interesting read for their advanced science students of which I know there are many. I am sure that it will be well used and appreciated.

Clear yet detailed and up to date

Beautiful pictures too but for someone who wants to understand what we know about stars and planets, I can't image that there is a better book out there. John Bally is an excellent communicator.
