Knowlson's first essay combines a verbal portrait of Beckett with a personal memoir of the writer. James Knowlson was the original founder of the Beckett archive (now the International Beckett Foundation) at the University of Reading, which also houses the Beckett Collection, now the world's largest collection of Beckett resources. Knowlson's previous publications include Frescoes of the Skull: The Later Prose and Drama of Samuel Beckett (Grove, 1980) and the highly praised biography Damned to Fame: The Life of Samuel Beckett (Simon & Schuster, 1999). John Haynes was privileged to work alongside Beckett as photographer in residence at the Royal Court Theatre in the 1970s, when Beckett was directing his plays. Haynes continues to work with the leading directors and actors of British contemporary theatre.

About the Author
John Haynes' previous book Taking the Stage with an introduction by Lindsay Anderson has become a classic of theatre photography. He was privileged to work alongside Samuel Beckett when he was directing his plays at the Royal Court Theatre in the seventies and John was photographer in residence. Haynes continues to work with the leading directors and actors of British contemporary theatre.

James Knowlson is the author of the major Beckett biography, Damned to Fame. The Life of Samuel Beckett (Bloomsbury, 1996). He is also the author of ten other books on or editions of Beckett. He was a personal friend of Samuel Beckett for twenty years.

necessary!

All of Calder's work is wonderful, but a separate book featuring his circus is something I can't do without. I'd even have been happy with an old beat-up copy rather than none at all. Calder is happiness.

I did not like the book, not a nice quality, not good fotos . the cover was marked
I bought at the same time another from Ugo Mulas and it was great. I really did not like it. I always buy books, is it any way to change it for another book next time. I am From argetina but I left the book at my brother.s house where it was sent. thanks a lot

Kindergarten-Grade 2?A look at 24 different holidays around the world. Each page contains the name of a celebration or observance, a simply written paragraph describing it, and an illustration showing people participating in it. Two pages of notes give more specific details. The basic text gives too little information for most children. For example, readers unfamiliar with Loy Krathong, Diwali, or Eid al-Fitr won't learn when or where they are celebrated unless they turn to concluding notes, which are written on a higher reading level and are in much smaller print. Colorful, simply shaped cut-paper pictures show people engaged in the celebrations. These spirited and cheerful illustrations are the book's strength, but the presentation is too confusing for the intended audience. Kid loves it, a few drawbacks

Well, I have to say that my 10 month old loves this book. He usually grabs this one if he's not in sleepy mode. I am glad to have a book like this that is colorful, full of happy faces and will entertain a wide age range.

Unfortunately, the pages are a little thin/weak and have quickly been destroyed by my child. To be expected from an infant, but I would appreciate slightly thicker, more durable pages since this is a book geared towards kids that can be useful for many years.

The picture for Dia de los Muertos is a bit off, since it is not a time that kids play with pinatas. Maybe some other inaccuracies in the book, but otherwise I like the entertainment value of the book with a nod towards intercultural understanding. I will probably be buying another copy when my child is a bit older.

I love the illustrations in this book and it is one of my children's favorites. I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 because when it describes the Fourth of July it states "When freedom first rang on our land", I don't feel comfortable with that line. We cannot say that the indigenous people of this land weren't free before being invaded.

Great intro to holidays around the world for young children.

This is a very brightly designed book that has fantastic illustrations. The text is easy to read for a first level reader. More importantly, each holiday has a detailed explaination in the back of the book. Great illustrations by Peter Linenthal. The only complaint I have is that the author chose the Jewish holiday of Hannakah instead of Passsover or Rosh Hashana. Hannakah is a minor holiday.

This history and guide to the workings and wares of "the largest wholesale fish market in the Western hemisphere" evokes the vitality of a marketplace with roots as old as New York City itself ("the pace is brisk, the atmosphere is macho"). The market serves as a microcosm of the culinary and cultural diversity of New York, as Beck's ( Produce: A Fruit and Vegetable Lovers' Guide ) collection of over 150 recipes, gathered from local homes and restaurants, celebrates an abundance of seafood. Descriptions of the fish sold at market (arranged alphabetically, by scientific rather than common name) include information on place of origin and seasonal availability, comparable quality of varieties and substitutions that will aid the fish purchaser. Equally useful are instructions on filleting and cleaning fish and advice on seafood safety (properly cooking or freezing fish will kill all potentially dangerous parasites). Recipes are organized by cooking technique--broiling, baking, frying--and feature ethnically inspired specialties, classic and New American dishes, haute and nouvelle French cuisines and basic recipes (baked whole fish). Somewhat Disappointed

This is an excellent book for someone interested in exploring the many facets of New York ethnic seafood dishes that started becoming popular in the 1970s. It is in fact a superb cookbook that will enrich any seafood cookbook library.

But I am not awarding it five stars because it simply does not convey many traditional New York seafood recipes from the seafood restaurants that once served New Yorkers near the Fulton Market, like Sweet's and the many fine traditional New York restaurants that served its produce.

Some 50 years, and further back, New York featured a host of traditional restaurants that served fish and shellfish dishes that could compete with any in the world. Their secret began with the freshest produce from the Fulton Fish Market. Traditional New York seafood dishes were "Simple Food", straightforward but perfect. They were usually broiled, grilled, baked, or fried in breadcrumbs; served with simple sauces, mostly either melted sweet butter or Tartar Sauce. These are the dishes and preparation techniques I had hoped to find in this book.

K-Gr. 2. Each book in the Winnie-the-Pooh Easy Reader series features one chapter from Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh or The House at Pooh Corner. The chapter is shortened, divided into four small sections, and formatted for beginning readers. In Pooh Goes Visiting, Pooh enjoys a repast in Rabbit's hole, but he becomes stuck in the doorway on his way out. In Tigger Comes to the Forest, Pooh discovers Tigger on his doorstep and takes him out to meet the other residents of the Hundred Acre Wood and find something that he likes for breakfast. Krensky does a good and sensitive job of gently adapting the language for beginning readers. He simplifies sentence structures and leaves out some phrases, while sticking to the essentials. Although some of the humor and cadence of Milne's original prose is lost, the simplified texts are better than might be expected. An ink-and-watercolor picture by Shepard, pulled from the original books, appears on nearly every page. Carolyn Phelan

Simplified, but faithful to the original Milne story

When I went to introduce my preschooler to Winnie-the-Pooh, I bought the big book with the complete stories and poems. It didn't take long for me to figure out that it wasn't quite right for my 3-year-old. Reading a story out of the original works takes a good 15-20 minutes, which is more than one can really expect from a preschooler or toddler. Also, the original Pooh is a bit like Sesame Street, in that there are phrases and indeed entire sections of the stories that adults will find amusing but which will just go over a child's head.

And yet, I didn't want to break down and go the route of the Disney-fied Pooh books, with their cartoonish illustrations and watered-down plots and characters.

That's why I was so pleased to find the Easy-to-Read series. There are six easy-to-read titles from two publishers. They are:

Winnie-the-Pooh and Some Bees
Pooh Goes Visiting
Eeyore Has a Birthday
Tigger Comes to the Forest
Christopher Robin Leads an Expedition
Pooh Invents a New Game

Each book is based on one chapter from the complete works. These little books are divided into four chapters, although it should be no problem to read one from start to finish in one sitting.

The print is large and well spaced, and there are ample illustrations (the original drawings by E.H. Shepard) on every page spread to keep little eyes engaged in the story. Most important, the editor has removed most of the passages that aren't so kid friendly and has simplified the stories without giving them a Disney style candy coating. One could read the original story and then the easy-to-read version and get the same basic plot; when going from the Milne works to the Disney versions, the same is certainly not true.

I didn't give these books five stars because the editor retained some language and dialogue that may be a bit confusing for children in the intended age range. Nevertheless, these books are a wonderful introduction to a classic cast of characters for the preschool set.

This is another beautiful story set from the series, but I have to admit that the voice of tigger is a bit annoying, other than that we still like it and it is definitely worth buying it, ...even if you prefer to skip the stories including tigger.

This was an instant success with my 4 1/2 year old son. He listens to audiobooks often and tends to request the cd's from this series mor than any others.
