I'm not crazy about this book or GMM

I guess I am not a fan of GMM in general. This is a solid introduction that has a wealth of information one would need if employing this methodology.

I just prefer likelihood based inference to GMM. If I don't know the distribution of the dependent variable, I'd consider GMM but I think the method is over used.

This book focus in a different method of econometric estimation. The information about this method is quite difficult to understand. This is a very well-written inside story of one journalist's battle against the world's biggest media titan. Although American and Brit readers may be unfamiliar with the Aussie newspapers and local issues in the book, the insights into Murdoch's ruthless business practices are (sadly) universal, and excitingly told. A must-read for anyone who follow's today's media monopolies.

About the Author
Bill Carruthers was born in 1924 in Glasgow. He won a bursary to Glasgow University, where he graduated with a first class honours degree in 1946 and a PhD in 1949. He moved to Exeter in 1956, working first for the Medical Research Council and then, from 1968, as a Lecturer then Senior Lecturer at the Department of Chemistry, University of Exeter. He died in April 1990, just a few months before he was due to retire. ***Widow's address: Mrs J. E. Carruthers, 72 Velwell Road, Exeter, Devon, EX4 4LD***

Iain Coldham worked with Dr. Carruthers at the University of Exeter, where he became a Senior lecturer in the Chemistry Department. He is now currently Reader at the University of Sheffield and specialises in organic synthesis.

Why Anthony Albanese matters and read this!

I was looking forward to reading this. The Labor woman who unseated John Howard in 2007 and in a blue ribbon seat. That I read it days after the 2013 Australian Federal election and the depressing sight of a Tony Abbot led government seating itself into power. As a New Zealander in Australia I cannot vote and that rankles above all else but it does not stop me having an opinion or engaging others in political discussion. The response is mostly along the lines of "you can't vote so shut up". So having lived in Australia for five years I was curious to get an insider's view of what went wrong from Kevin Rudd's famous 2007 victory. I have already educated myself about recent State (NSW) and Federal politics so knew about the role of the factions, the corrupt and the venal. Ms McKewan, as a journalist, writes well. As a novice politician she made a fair fist of national and electorate politics and did not deserve to be turfed out by a former tennis star turned property development speculator (John Alexander)in 2010. However it is her witness of the deposing of Rudd and installing of Julia Gillard which is insightful and although partisan (she backed Kevin) she is even handed in describing events rather than personalising. For example she lists Rudds flaws but also his strengths and bottom line, she clearly outlines the consequences to Labor of this coup. A lesson in 2013 still not learnt as many of the coup supporters are currently calling for Rudd to stand down ignoring that it was his ELECTORATE of Griffith Queensland that have the right to make that call and they have just elected him. You hang in there Kevin and represent the people who voted you in. After reading this my hope is that Anthony Albanese will lead the Labor party but alas, i suspect the factions will ensure their man Bill Shorten will take over. So many more years in the wilderness with the compass bent to buggery is not a fair deal for the representation of Labor ideals to Australia and its people.

I thought that this book would have been more interesting than it was. Maxine didn't seem to be as vibrant in this book as she has in the past as a journalist.

It wasn't a bad book, but it's not worth $35

It wasn't a bad book, but it's not worth $35! My copy, which I bought the day it was released, cost $30. Despite its current price, I have to say it wasn't a bad read. Her situation was unique, in that she was a close colleague of Rudd's; an MP; and part of the Kevin '07 campaign which swept Labor to victory. Gives an account of how Rudd was undermined, and her first hand experience of being a member of the Rudd government. The book also provides a first hand account of how she unseated a sitting Prime Minister, and how and why she lost the seat at the next election.

About the Author
Leendert Adriaan (Sampurno) Bruijnzeel is a Professor of Land Use and Hydrology based at VU University, Amsterdam. He has 35 years of experience with forest hydrological research in the humid tropics, mostly in South-East Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America. His main research interests include the water and nutrient dynamics of tropical forests, above all montane cloud forests; his other main research topics include the hydrological impacts of land-cover change (deforestation/reforestation) and erosion and sediment transport processes. Professor Bruijnzeel is the author of two other books and the co-editor of Forests, Water, and People in the Humid Tropics also published by Cambridge University Press (2005) and UNESCO as part of the International Hydrology Series. In 2005 he received the prestigious Busk Medal from the Royal Geographical Society.

Frederick N. Scatena is Professor and Chair of the Department of Earth and Environmental Science at the University of Pennsylvania. Since 1988 he has served as the Principal Co-PI of the National Science Foundation's Luquillo Long-Term Ecological Research Project and since 2009 as the Lead PI of the NSF Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory, both in Puerto Rico. Professor Scatena has worked in tropical forest hydrology for the past 32 years, on topics ranging from water supply to the influence of hurricanes on the biogeochemistry and water quality of Caribbean streams. He has been awarded the International Institute of Tropical Forestry Puerto Rican Ecology Award (2008), and various USDA Research Scientist Awards.

Lawrence Hamilton is a Professor Emeritus (Cornell University) and former Senior Fellow at the East-West Center in Hawai'i. He has authored over 300 publications throughout his career and is known popularly as the 'father of cloud forests' due to his successful campaign over many years to get these unique forests on the international conservation agenda. His awards include Forest Conservationist of the Year from the New York State Conservation Council (1969); the Environmental Achiever Award from Friends of UNEP (1987); the Packard International Parks Merit Award from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) World Commission on Protected Areas (2003); and the prestigious King Albert Gold Medal for Mountain Conservation Leadership (2004). In 2008 he was named an Honorary Member of IUCN, and in the same year was profiled as one of the 20 global 'Earth Movers' by IUCN.

A great history book on British quilting
